Concern Worldwide Technical Advisor-Livelihoods Jobs in Kenya; The jobholder will be a key part in supporting the technical implementation of the Horn of Africa Child Wasting Initiative known as “Hanaano” (meaning “To Nurture” in Somali) across 105 communities in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The Programme works closely with our implementing partners RACIDA (Kenya), Lifeline Gedo (Somalia) and Pastoralist Concern (Ethiopia), as well as in partnerships with IGAD and Tufts University.
Hanaano aims to reduce the prevalence of child wasting in the Mandera Triangle by (i) engaging households in behaviours to improve infant, young child, adolescent and maternal nutrition including improved access to safe water and sanitation and gender equality; (ii) engaging households in profitable and climate resilient livelihood strategies for improved food security including natural resource management, food production and early action using a crisis modifier; and (iii) generating and using local evidence to influence global wasting prevention strategies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities Strategic and Technical Support: Provide strategic and technical guidance on the livelihood components of the Hanaano initiative to country teams (Nutrition Sensitive Livelihood Programming, Food production (crops and livestock), Financial Inclusion, Value Chains , Market Systems and Natural Resource Management)
Ensure livelihoods approaches address the diverse needs of livelihoods profiles in the region (Agro-pastoral, pastoralist, riverine, peri-urban), particularly focusing on those living in extreme poverty as our core participants who are most at risk of wasting.
Capacity Building: Build the technical capacity of programme teams through remote support and country visits. This will involve formal training sessions, webinars, workshops, remote mentoring, programme reviews, evaluations, and sharing key technical resources that reflect best practices in addressing child wasting through tailored livelihood strategies.
Programme Support: Provide general support to programmes by leading a Livelihoods Technical Working Group (all Concern and Partner technical Focal Points) and lead on any Livelihood Related Analysis and SOPs.
Evidence Synthesis and Application: Synthesize and document practical evidence and learning from the programme. Identify ways to apply this knowledge promptly to improve policy and practice within Concern and among partners, ensuring that it addresses the specific needs of vulnerable groups at risk of wasting.
Relationship Development: Foster relationships with other agencies focused on livelihoods, including research institutes and technical working groups. Represent Concern in national and regional forums to advocate for integrated approaches that consider various livelihoods profiles.
Advocacy Support: Collaborate with the Advocacy unit to contribute to regional and international policy discussions related to livelihoods. Emphasize the importance of understanding diverse livelihoods profiles in addressing issues related to hunger, conflict, and climate change.
Reporting Excellence: Ensure that reports are timely, high-quality, and that information for monthly, partner, and donor reports is accurate and reliable. This includes incorporating insights from value chain analysis to demonstrate the impact of interventions on different livelihood profiles.
Operational Research Contribution: Contribute to prioritizing, designing, implementing, and disseminating operational research in livelihoods within the program. Work closely with
field teams and research partners to ensure that research findings inform strategies that meet the needs of those most at risk of wasting.
Other Duties
Adhere to and promote the standards outlined in the Concern Code of Conduct and associated policies to their team, beneficiaries, and be committed to providing a safe working environment
Participating and contributing towards Concern’s emergency response, as and when necessary
Comply with Concern’s health, safety and security guidelines during emergencies
Take all possible measure to meet Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS)
Any other duties as assigned by the Line Manager
Person Specification
Minimum Education, Qualifications & Experience Required:
Experience living and working in the Mandera Triangle
Master’s degree in livelihoods related field (agronomy, food security, ecology, social science, economics, development studies, or related field)
5-7 years relevant experience, with at least 3 years management or advisory experience
Experience in implementing livelihood programmes with a sound understanding of at least three of the following areas: Financial Inclusion (VSLA), Agriculture, Food Security, Market Systems Development, Natural Resource Management, Climate Change Adaptation, Crisis Modifier and Environment
Strong understanding of gender issues in relation to livelihoods programmes and practical ways to promote gender equality within them.
Experience working in integrated, multi-sectoral programmes. Ability to work both as part of a team and independently. Adaptable to evolving work priorities and schedules.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills in English
Ability to travel internationally, at least 40%, in fragile and conflict affected contexts, sometimes with short notice
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
Experience in market systems development approach – assessing markets, developing value chains, working with various market actors including the private sector.
Understanding of adaptive programme management concepts such as anticipatory action (AA), crisis modifier, early warning early action (EWEA)
Experience in supporting the roll out of cross cutting approaches within livelihoods (e.g. conflict, environment, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), equality, protection)
Experience in livelihoods analysis, field surveys, use of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools, and nutrition sensitive programming
Experience working with research institutions, coordination fora and other relevant international livelihoods institutions
Prior work experience with Concern in one of the country programmes
