Job DescriptionJob purpose : The purpose of the position is to ensure that hygiene promotion is integrated with the nutrition interventions and that the behaviour change brought about increases the impact and effectiveness of the nutrition project.
The job holder is responsible for ensuring high quality behaviour change communication and contributing to reduction of water bourne disease in the beneficiaries attending the nutrition programme.
The post is new and due to high levels of diarrhoea among the beneficiary population which will contribute to the continued high levels of acute malnutrition.
This position reports to the Nutrition Manager, and technically to the Hygiene and behavioural change specialist based in Addis and will work closely with nutrition staff under the field office and other implementing partners in the camp involved in Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) and health.
Planning, Technical supports and Facilitation Prepare detail WASH activities monthly Plan and ensure its implementation as per SPHERE & UNHCR performance standard with the agreed time -frame.
Organize and provide hygiene promotion trainings for all staff (nutrition and livelihood) and outreach workers
Conduct counselling on hygiene, sanitation at infant and young child feeding (IYCF) points
Provide Baby WASH training for nutrition staff and outreach workers
Implement and monitor the Baby WASH implementation
Ensure all Concern nutrition centres (inpatient and outpatient) have appropriate sanitation facilities for beneficiaries and staff to support hygienic practice
Ensure and monitor all concern nutrition centres have a conducive environment to prevention and teaching about prevention of communicable disease
Ensure cooking demonstrations at sites and in the community at mother to mother groups are conducted hygienically and key hygiene education included in the sessions
Closely monitor the integration of hygiene promotion activities with nutrition intervention
Coordinate with stakeholders and regularly track the diarrhoeal cases in under five children and vulnerable adults in the camp
Take part in preparing all the required information, education, communication (IEC)/BCC materials and identifying and developing appropriate hygiene promotion messages
Implement, monitor and supervise the implementation of hygiene promotion activities on the selected themes and key hygiene messages
Take part in conducting barrier analyses and knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) surveys to assess the impact of WASH in the nutrition intervention
Organize global hygiene days celebration at nutrition centres and collaborate with stakeholders to address the links between WASH and nutrition at camp level
Document health related data and keep records on activities of hygiene promotion and prepare monthly progress reports
Serve as the focal point person for all activities related to Concern WASH/Nutrition project
Coordination and networking
Establish and liaise good working relationships with Concern staff, government bodies, ARRA, UNHCR, WFP and other Implementing partners (WASH, Health and other relevant) as requested by the line manager.
Ensure good coordination with other Concern team members (Outreach and site team leaders, IYCF Officer, CMAM Officers and outreach workers) other staff and provide frequent updates as per established project work plan activities and timeframe.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Take part in Hygiene and sanitation related assessment, surveys and project evaluation in data collection, data entry, analysis and reporting in order to evaluate the impact of WASH activities
Oversee the collection of Hygiene and sanitation data in line with UNHCR/ARRA, Concern guidelines and according to internal and external donor requirements.
Plan and conduct
joint project monitoring and evaluation activities with IRC/ARRA/UNHCR
Develop different monitoring tools based on the activities.
Reporting and Accountability
Ensure that hygiene promotion activities utilizes standardized protocols, policies and guidelines, as prescribed by the UNHCR/ ARRA for refugee’s response in Gambella region.
Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports
At all times, adhere to policies and guidelines of Concern
Give support to the field staff on mainstreaming gender, protection, accountability, HIV/AIDS, inclusive and equality in the implementation of hygiene and sanitation promotion

Ensure that all hygiene promotion activities are documented and recorded including desegregated data and report to the Project manager and head office WASH department.

Person Specification:
B.sc in Environmental Health science studies with 2 years’ experience or diploma in environmental health and 4 years’ experience
Minimum of 3 years for degree holders in hygiene behavior change communication in Government or INGOs in emergency programs. Refugee camp is an advantage
Have knowledge and experience in PHAST, CHAST, child to child and CHC approaches
Excellent in facilitation and providing training and capacity building for staff
Excellent written and spoken English and Agnuak/Nuer language is an advantage
Ability to understand and respect the cultural, religious and political environment and to work well with staff and local authorities in a diplomatic manner
Core Competency : Knowledge of CMAM and WASH integration
