Clinton Health Access Initiative Associate, Maternal, Newborn Health Jobs in South Africa

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance.


CHAI will convene a consortium of leading clinical and health systems experts in the country to design, test, and scale-up a replicable model for reducing maternal deaths, newborn deaths, and stillbirths over a four-year period.

The program will strengthen national governance structures for policy development and implementation as well as provincial and district management's capacity to strategically plan and manage service delivery to improve MNH outcomes.

Position Overview

  • CHAI is looking to hire a highly motivated individual for the role of Associate, Maternal, Newborn Health.
  • The Associate will provide strategic, analytical, and operational support to design and implement targeted national and sub-national strategies in order to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
  • In doing so, he/she will work directly with key government stakeholders and report to the MNH Programme Manager.
  • The position is based in CHAI offices in Pretoria and may require up to 40% travel within South Africa and internationally.
  • Support the development and refinement of the MNH program's strategic initiatives, ensuring ongoing alignment with the DOH strategic goals and priorities
  • Translate objectives provided by the government, donors, and other partner organizations into clear activity plans, and provide guidance to MNH team on prioritization of initiatives
  • Support the program team to develop compelling presentations and reports
  • Support the MNH team in South Africa to meet established program objectives under DOH guidance, including, but not limited to: increasing MNH product access and security, increasing the utilization of data for strategic planning, and ensuring the spectrum of service delivery is strengthened in focal provinces, creating a model that can be scaled nationally
  • Compile, synthesize and analyse data to inform the development of assessments, training materials, reports and other program materials to ensure effective program execution
  • Liaise with the Health Systems team to ensure MNH health information data is routinely validated and can be effectively utilized by DOH for strategic planning, supported through the use of dashboards and tools
  • Establish collaborative relationships with the DOH, partner organisations and other relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure communication and alignment of activities across government and partner stakeholders efforts and across other CHAI programs in South Africa to ensure coordination and successful execution of the SRH program
  • Liaise with clinical and technical experts to develop, test, and integrate strategic and clinical
    quality indicators for MNH into HIMS
    Other tasks as directed by the Programme Manager

  • Minimum 3 years of work experience
  • Bachelor's degree with exceptional work experience; Master's degree in a related field such as statistics, economics, epidemiology, monitoring and evaluation preferred
  • Experience analysing large data sets using MS Excel
  • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet application
    Excellent analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, leadership, and problem solving skills
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations that translate the results of team activities into meaningful policy recommendations

    Advantages

  • Experience using statistical software such as Stata, SAS, SPSS or R
  • Proficiency with Tableau or other data visualization software
  • Entrepreneurial mind-set, including ability to work independently, handle ambiguity and multiple priorities simultaneously, and self-motivate in a limited structure environment
