The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus.

Overview of Role

CHAI is seeking a driven and highly motivated Associate Director to oversee a growing portfolio of new digital health workstreams across CHAI countries. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to significantly shape and drive CHAI’s digital health work and be part of a team that focuses on thoughtful technology design and development; fosters local ownership and sustainability; and seeks to achieve ambitious public health goals globally.

This is a senior-level position reporting to the Senior Director of Digital Health and working closely with CHAI’s program and country leadership to advance CHAI’s digital health programs, objectives, and strategies.

As Associate Director, the candidate will lead a team of Associates and Technical Advisors in the strategic planning and operational delivery of new digital health programs, initially focusing on the applications of digital health in diagnostics, immunization, supply chain, and assistive technologies.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Program Management

  • Drive and oversee the development, initiation, execution, growth, and monitoring of new digital health programs at CHAI, with an initial focus on digital health for diagnostics, immunization, supply chain, and assistive technologies.

  • Set vision, strategies, and approaches, annual programmatic goals and targets, and mentor and support teams to work on ambitious but realistic goals.

  • Provide technical guidance and support for digital health programs, guide teams to resolve issues and mitigate risks, and support problem resolution to ensure implementation progress and delivery.

  • Work closely with leadership and staff on CHAI program and country teams to ensure cohesive team collaboration, alignment on goals and donor requirements, and drive towards collective impact.

  • Support teams in development, synthesis, and review of donor-related deliverables (e.g., annual meeting presentations, annual report, donor country visits), ensuring quality outputs while limiting impact on day-to-day work.

  • Lead on new initiatives – scope and explore the applications of technology in additional areas, develop concept notes, proposals, and budgets for internal and external audiences, and lead the initiation and execution of new programs as the team grows.

  • Develop and maintain up-to-date expertise in developments in digital health; Serve as a trusted, accessible advisor for the digital health team, CHAI leadership and teams, and external partners.

  • As part of the digital health leadership team, shape and advise on digital health strategy and objectives to increase the impact of CHAI’s work.

    Relationship and Partner management

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with CHAI teams – with leadership and staff in-country, and in program teams – to understand priorities and goals, inform and influence strategies on the use of digital health, and explore new workstreams.

  • Explore, develop, and manage partnerships with global and in-country digital health and/or data systems partners to collaborate on initiatives and inform CHAI activities and strategies.

  • Engage and manage relationships with funders interested in CHAI’s digital health work and vision

    Team and People Management

  • Build and foster a
    motivated, results-driven, and dedicated team who can work across the organizational matrix to ensure progress towards digital health outcomes.

  • Manage and support the work of 3-5 Associates and Technical Advisors, providing regular ongoing technical guidance, coaching, and overall support to their growth and performance.

  • Set priorities for team to ensure sound work planning, technical project management and task completion; coordinate work activities with program and country teams.

  • Help to shape the culture and dynamics of the digital health team, foster team engagement, effectiveness, and cohesion across geographies and workstreams.

  • Make hiring and compensation decisions; support onboarding and recruitment of new CHAI staff working on digital health.

  • Role model the values and mission of CHAI.

    Operations and Financial Management

  • Oversee execution against program budgets, review and inform budgets and reallocations, and help draft financial reports for donors.

  • Maintain strong working relationships with CHAI’s operational teams, including finance, HR, and Safety and Security, to seek guidance and support where needed for the team’s work.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, digital health, business, health sciences, public administration, or related field

  • At least eight years’ working experience with increasing levels of responsibility, team management, and leadership, preferably in the development and application of technology solutions

  • Experience working in resource-limited settings, particularly sub-Saharan Africa

  • Proven experience in implementing technology-based solutions with users, preferably for public health and in low- and middle-income countries

  • Familiarity with technologies for data collection and reporting, data integration, and data visualization and analysis; with standards for interoperability, data privacy and security; with digital transformation frameworks and approaches

  • Experience providing clear guidance and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders on context-appropriate technology solutions, processes, and operational considerations; ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving mindset, with the ability to design and drive effective long-term strategies

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; proven ability to set direction and structure, prioritize among complex options, and uphold high performance expectations

  • High emotional intelligence, patience, and thoughtfulness even in high-pressure, stressful situations

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to build, strengthen, and leverage complex and nuanced stakeholder relationships in a matrixed and multicultural environment

  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, able to concisely communicate complex ideas in a manner that builds buy-in among diverse stakeholders

  • Passionate about people development and able to help diverse team members improve skills and performance through coaching and consistent supportive accountability

  • Highly entrepreneurial with strong self-motivation

  • Strong work ethic, integrity, credibility, and dedication to CHAI’s mission

  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 30-40% of the year

    Advantages

  • Past experience in a management role on CHAI’s country or global teams

  • Relationships and/or experience working with major digital health organizations – technology organizations, implementing organizations, or donors

  • Demonstrated prior experience working with governments and/or overseeing implementation of complex digital health projects across multiple countries

  • Experience in fundraising for global health or digital health projects from major donor organizations

  • Knowledge of common health information management systems and digital global goods (e.g., DHIS2, OpenLMIS, OpenSRP, CommCare)

  • Experience in defining and measuring performance of digital products

  • Experience working remotely with a decentralized/remote team

  • Master’s degree in information systems, digital health, business, health sciences, public administration, or related field
