About the Role
As Programme Officer your main responsibilities will be to contribute to the planning, monitoring, and reporting of project activities based on targets, agreements and Civil Rights Defenders' standards and procedures.
You will also identify, assess, and propose new activities and partnerships relevant for the local and regional context, as well as monitor and analyse the human rights situation primarily in South Sudan and the East and Horn of Africa region.
The role offers great variety, including work tasks such as:
Conduct human rights activities with partners
Initiate, provide advice on and participate in advocacy actions
Initiate and participate in communications activities and media work
Assist in developing proposals for the Africa Programme
Assist in developing relations with existing and potential donors
Establish and maintain contacts with relevant decision-makers and stakeholders
Travel frequently (when possible) in the region, including annual trips to Civil Rights
Defenders headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden

To be suitable for this role you have:
2-3 years of working experience in human rights and/or civil society areas in South Sudan
Commendable knowledge of the socio-political context, current developments, civil society sector and human rights situation in South Sudan
Additional knowledge about the East and Horn of Africa region is an advantage
Documented experience of NGO-work, project management and/or advocacy work
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, knowledge of other local languages is a strong asset
Basic skill to develop project concept notes and budget, follow up financial arrangements
Basic skills to use Microsoft tools especially Word, Excel and Teams effectively
If you also have a Bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations or similar, including education on international human rights mechanisms, we believe you are the one we are looking for.
Knowledge in local languages spoken in South Sudan is a strong merit.
About the employment
This is a full-time temporary employment (one-year contract) with the possibility of extension, starting in January 2021 or according to an agreement.
