The Position
The position holder will collect and validate data obtained in breeding activities, including nurseries, trials, genotypic
analyses, doubled haploid generation, seed health evaluations, etc.
Provide support for the use of breeding data
management-related software and hardware.
Key Responsibilities
Collect, prepare, and load files into databases and/or repositories by carrying out standardized data quality control processes and routine data transformations.
Ensure that all files meet minimal metadata standards prior to loading into databases and/or repositories.
Maintain records of data submission processes.
Help train people in the use of breeding information management-related software including data capture and visualization tools.
Provide on-site support for the use of breeding information management-related software as well as hardware such as tablets, printers, and barcode scanners.
Extend regional data support via travel to experimental stations within Kenya, as well as in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and potentially other countries in Africa.
Essential Academic & Professional
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area such as agriculture, plant breeding, biometrics, plant biology or biology.
At least 3 years of experience working with crop breeding data.
Training in statistical analysis of data management will be an advantage.
Skills and Competencies
Ability
to troubleshoot unexpected problems based on experience, common sense and creativity.
Substantial experience with computers and a variety of software applications in an academic or research setting.
Experience in using tablets, smartphones, and other devices related to data capture and management.
Good ability to learn and implement new software.
Pro-active service orientation.
Good communication and teaching/training skills.
Willingness to travel and to work outside of normal office hours.
