Position Summary

This position is responsible for advocating, listening, protecting, celebrating and demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ to the Children of Grace (CoG) sponsored children in Primary School.

The ideal Support Officer will be an experienced child educator, competent in prioritizing and working with little supervision, self-motivated and trustworthy.

A children of Grace Child Support Officer is to be a Christian role-model for the children, providing relevant support, character development, academic, social, spiritual and personal support to the children through tutoring and coaching, empowerment programs, coordinating health care provision and child advocacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully the individual must be able to perform each of the requirements listed below which are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. .

The Main Duties Are as Follows:

  • Child support and empowerment (70%)
  • Guardian/ parent engagement (15%)
  • Schools partnership management (10%)
  • Other responsibilities (5%)
    Child support and empowerment (70%)
  • Develop positive and meaningful relationships with children through understanding the child and scheduling one on one follow up sessions on a regular basis depending on the needs of the child.
  • Listening and advising children on the academic, personal, health and spiritual challenges they face through building trust and confidence with the children.
  • Conduct an annual assessment of academics and home situation for each mentee at the beginning of the year to tailor the support they will extend to each child within their environment; school, village, home while studying these assessments with the previous ones and make recommendations to the supervisor on way forward with each mentee.
  • With support from the Programs Coordinator, design and deliver weekly tutoring and coaching, book clubs, Girls Can program and mobile library programs to the children and compile reports on each child and how they are progressing.
  • Organize a community service project for the children in their villages each term.
  • Track, analyze and compile a termly academic performance report for the children and come up with clear plans on how to help the students that are performing below the acceptable average marks and track the actions on a weekly basis.
  • Working with the Programs Coordinators participate in the design and delivery of Holiday Bible schools and children’s camps.
  • Ensure children receive routine health screening and are available during mobile clinics and attend clinical visits whenever they
    are not well.
  • Conduct regular role calls at the schools to ensure all children are at school and attending classes
  • Identify opportunities for children to develop their gifts and talents and support them to grow their gifts and talents.

    Parent/ Guardian engagement (15%)

  • Conduct home visits with the guardians to ensure that the children are receiving the necessary care and support from the parents i.e. academic, personal, emotional, hygiene, feeding etc.
  • Follow up with parents on their responsibilities towards top-up payments, attending CoG community empowerment programs, attending students’ activities and meetings at school, following up with teachers on mentee’s progress.
  • Help students that graduate from one level to another transition smoothly into the next level i.e. helping them put together applications for scholarships into senior 1 or vocational schools.
    Schools partnership management (10%)
  • Ensure Children of Grace has up dated Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) with allocated schools and ensure that the conditions of the MOUs are upheld by both parties.
  • Identify and work with Head teachers, Directors and class teachers, within the schools to conduct follow-up meetings on the performance of the students during weekly school visits.
  • Work with the schools’ administration to have time allocated to tutoring, coaching, character development, activities during weekly school visits.
  • Advocate for children’s rights at schools with the teachers and other stakeholders.

  • Significant experience implementing innovative educational programs for primary school
    children.
  • Experience in teaching, coaching or tutoring primary school children.
  • Excellent computer and typing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point.
  • Ability to analyze problems and make sound operational decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and methodological approach to program management.
  • Attention to detail and strong ability to engage children.
  • Ability to follow through on tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be a team player and leader.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to innovate in the delivery of their work.
