Background

The accountant serves as a strategic resource in the Afya Ugavi Finance and Accounting team to support non Afya Ugavi billable and nonbillable staff hired under the Kenyan registration. He/she will work with the Afya Ugavi Finance team under the direction of the F&A Specialist to complete accounting and financial tasks in compliance with USAID AIDAR, FAR, and ADS regulations and Chemonics policies, procedures, and regulations.

S/he oversees the processing of accounting transactions according to the general principles of accounting and adheres to home office field accounting manual procedures.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Review copies of all expense receipts, invoices, make payments and ensure that all supporting documentation and approvals are accurate.

  • Enter all accounting transactions into the accounting software (Abacus) and ensure proper coding.

  • Prepare coding sheets before submission to Senior Accountant for review and Chief of Party for approval.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the home office Field Accounting & Compliance Team (FACT) representative.

  • Support Anchor project with preparing bank reconciliations and end month processes.

  • Facilitate provision of information and documentation during audits.

  • Maintain the project’s accounting files system, ensuring all vouchers are in order, completed correctly and saved in respective folders in sharepoint.

  • Support the processing of payroll each month and prepare salary payslips forms, as well as the Provident Fund withholdings and employer contributions.

  • Liaise with income tax authority and remit employee withholdings monthly.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with the home office Field Accounting & Compliance Team (FACT) representative.

  • Review Travel Advance Requests (TAARs) and expense
    reports (ERs) for accuracy and completeness.

  • Process for payment approved TAARs and ERs

  • Assist with the administration of VAT reimbursement process.

  • Coordinate the preparation of WTR from Pilot hires.

  • Performs other duties as required

    Qualification requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or related.

  • ACCA, CPA certification or equivalent is required.

  • Six years of experience working in finance and accounting required.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with accounting software outputs and/or Excel.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with Abacus highly preferred.

  • Ability to provide proactive customer service to both internal and external clients.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion and work with highly confidential and/or protected information required.

  • Exhibits high emotional IQ with emphasis on empathy and compassion.

  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem-solving.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to multitask with strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office applications i.e excel.
