Despite recent advances, Zambia continues to experience high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. As of 2014, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was estimated to be 398 per 100,000 live births, and the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) was 24 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Zambia has one of the highest total fertility rates (6.2 children per woman) in the world. While nearly half of married women use a modern contraceptive, 21% have an unmet need for Family Planning (FP).
Adolescent girls are particularly at risk due to societal factors. 32% of adolescents aged 15-17 and 60% of those aged 18-19 are sexually active in Zambia.
Almost one in five adolescent girls aged 15-19 are already married (compared to only one in 100 adolescent boys); and 25% of girls aged 17 and 60% of girls aged 19 have already started child bearing.
Recognizing the need for an innovative and high impact response to reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality rates by 40% over 4 years, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) plans to roll out a comprehensive Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal and New-born Health (SRMNH) program, which uses an integrated approach to to ensure that women and babies have access to high quality delivery, postpartum and postnatal services, no matter where a delivery occurs, create linkages through the entire system from communities up to tertiary care, and leaves a sustainable system for on-going impact.
CHAI is seeking highly motivated individuals with outstanding credentials, analytical ability, and communication skills.
The candidates must have a thorough understanding of the landscape and health system structure in the province.
He/she must be able to independently drive the implementation of this program at provincial level and to build strong relationships with government officials, private and public partners.
Additionally, the successful candidates will adhere to the CHAI values of: resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, flexibility, independence, humility,
and work ethic.
The Provincial Coordinator will report directly to the Training and Mentorship Program Manager, and will be based in Kasama, Northern Province.
The candidate should have the ability to travel extensively within and across districts.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision and guidance of the Program Manager, support and monitor the implementation of the SRMNH Program at provincial level
Oversee and participate in the assessment of supported health facilities for SRMNH program implementation
Coordinate Field Coordinators ensuring program activities are implemented on time and milestones are achieved.
Support and monitor the implementation of training and mentoring programs for health providers, providing
Support and monitor the implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities designed to assess program impact
Support and monitor the implementation of community-based programs targeting community resource persons,
Support and monitor the implementation of emergency transport and referral systems at community level
Coordinate regular follow-up activities with providers, SMAG networks, and relevant regulatory officials at the district level to identify gaps in availability of healthcare services and recommend specific actions to overcome identified challenges;
Provide targeted support to provincial and district health authorities designed to improve availability and use of essential life-saving commodities for SRMNH.
Coordinate the set-up of the Maternal New-born Health Surveillance System at district, facility and community level.
Oversee commodity logistics interventions
Collate regular quality and progress facility reports program reports as required.
Participate in program meetings and technical working groups
Perform any other responsibilities
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in health sciences or community health or public health and a minimum of five years’ experience in the public or private sector
Strong background in MNH clinical practice or strong background working in SRMNH with rural communities
Ability to organize and coordinate meetings and workshops, meet tight deadlines and generate data-driven reports
Able to work in a fast-paced environment with maximum efficiency and impact;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal capabilities;
Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and an ability to communicate effectively and build durable relationships with people of varied professional and cultural backgrounds;
Ability to navigate complex government processes and influence decision-making in a professional and collaborative manner;
