Job DescriptionThe Center for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa) is a World Bank supported center of excellence for education and research at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The main aim of CDT-Africa is to serve as a platform for equitable access to interventions (medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and complex interventions) and bring about sustainable development in Africa through high-quality capacity development for innovative therapeutic discovery.
As part of this effort, CDT-Africa would like to hire experienced research associates who can assist CDT-Africa diagnostic reagent and assay development research projects.
Principal responsibilities
Synthesize compounds of interest in support of a lead optimization program as directed by the lead chemist.
Develop and optimize synthetic methods to synthesize compounds.
Purify the products of multiple-step syntheses on milligram to gram reaction scales.
Characterize the products of chemical reactions using appropriate instrumentation including, but not limited to, NMR, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry.
Assist the project team and chemists as needed with all aspects of the up-to-date information and literature on clinical, medicinal, synthesis, purification, properties, and characterization of small molecule drugs.
Work on multiple projects, either individually or in small teams
Assist and/or lead trouble-shooting activities for specific products
Design and Perform rigorous method validations and data analysis/write-up/submission support.
Assist in review data and make the appropriate decisions and takes action on them to drive projects to meet timelines
Generate documentation in compliance with Quality Systems and Good Laboratory Practices.
Identifies potential problems early in a project and implementation phase and
makes suggestions on how to resolve them while
keeping key deadlines in mind
Maintain laboratory notebooks
Additional tasks as directed by the Head of the Centre or investigators.
Requirements
MSc in Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
Project on synthesis or experience working as a synthetic organic chemist.
Experience in designing and performing multiple-step synthesis from commercially available reagents.
Able to independently perform diverse organic syntheses, purifications, & characterizations.
Ability to keep complete and accurate record of all observations, measurements, techniques, procedures, and conclusions in a laboratory notebook.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Highly motivated and creative.
Ability to search, analyze, and utilize the
scientific literature
Proficiency with ChemDraw, SciFinder and Microsoft Office Suite
Publication in the area of organic synthesis is desirable
Personal attributes
Well organized
Good organizational skills and able to multi-task
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work with others
