Job Summary & Purpose:

The CARE Kenya’s Internship Program offers recent graduates an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with CARE. Interns at CARE Kenya get experiential learning opportunities in the humanitarian sector and a meaningful internship experience that will support their academic, professional, and personal development.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Intern to join our team. Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Research Intern will contribute to the project’s key research and learning agenda and gain valuable experience in a multicultural environment. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of public health principles, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.

Roles and Resposibilities:

Responsible and accountable to the Project manager, the research intern will form part of the CSDW project team and will be attached /occasionally assigned to the project sites. S/he is expected to support the research officer and project officers in:

  • Research and Documentation

  • Monitoring Evaluation and Data Analysis

  • Community engagement, and communication

  • Capacity building, Liaison, and Networking

    Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

    Research and Documentation

  • Support in identifying research gaps on water quality, gender integration, and community governance.

  • Assist in research tools formulation, preparation, and development of research reports and manuscripts for publication.

  • Support in developing data collection tools for use throughout the project implementation period and ensure quality project data is collected and regularly used to inform project improvement decisions.

  • Assist in mobilizing communities, capacity building, and community governance research and learning issues ensuring tasks are undertaken on schedule.

    Monitoring Evaluation and Data Analysis

  • Assist the Research Officer in enhancing linkages at the community level to boost the adoption of safe drinking water and hygiene practices

  • Assist in ensuring increasing partners’ knowledge and improving access to safe drinking water using P&G Purifier of Water and hygiene promotion in schools and clinics.

  • School water quality monitoring and maintenance monitoring

  • In cooperation with research officer support in designing and coordinating internal assessments, studies, and research including water quality, gender inclusion, and governance.

  • Support the dissemination of lessons learned and maximize opportunities for capacity building.

  • Contribute monthly quantitative and qualitative data analysis as part of the project’s routine monitoring.

  • Contribute to drafting of regular monitoring reports for dissemination during stakeholders’ monthly, quarterly, and annual discussions.

  • Support the project officers in data collection for research pieces within the project including periodic surveys to monitor the uptake of water purifiers by schools, health facilities, and households.

  • Support the project officers to identify potential most significant change stories, human interest stories, case studies, and best practices that can be further developed to improve the project portfolio.

  • Support the Project Officers to conduct post-distribution monitoring (PDM) of WASH NFI
    distributions to understand beneficiary satisfaction levels.

  • Supporting the Project Officer to map out training needs of county /national government teams and other relevant partners and plan for training on water quality improvement based on project/government- approved curriculum.

  • Monitor trends of absenteeism in schools through school register by term and facilitate forward feed and back feed.

  • Support in the development and maintenance of research datasets

    Community engagement, and communication

  • Represent the CSDW project in community meetings related to the project.

  • Assist in developing and coordinating the implementation of a water quality communication strategy for government collaboration and influence.

  • Support in community strengthening and support for policy implementation and governance Advocacy, community engagement, and communication.

  • Assist in the integration of research and learning approaches in community dialogue to promote the effective delivery of community and school WASH interventions.

  • Support in developing key advocacy messages for the promotion of water quality service improvement through dialogues and advocacy tools.

    Capacity building, Liaison, and Networking

  • Seek opportunities for information sharing and learning exchanges with local actors/INGOs to promote learning and coordination at national and sub-national levels.

  • Support mapping learning and training opportunities for project and partner staff

  • Support all capacity-building initiatives that are well coordinated with wider involvement of the program quality MEAL team.

  • Support the CSDW project to develop and maintain a contact network of researchers, decision-makers, and partner organizations relevant to the project’s work on water quality management and WASH gender inclusion.

  • Engage the Government and other development partners to influence policy that prioritizes.

  • Mobilizing partnerships with local civil society organizations,

    Delegated Duties

  • Perform other responsibilities as may be directed by the Project Manager

    Qualifications:

  • Completed bachelor’s degree in environmental health sciences/Public Health/community health and
    development.

  • Knowledge of research ethics principles

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail and accuracy

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural professional environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Work experience is not a requirement.

  • The research Ethics course will be an added advantage.

  • Competencies: Good report-writing skills, data collection, and analysis, Computer Literacy
