Summary of position:

Under the general supervision of the Property Assistant, the Senior Maintenance Technician performs repairs in one or several functional areas of expertise for the mission such as electricity, heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC), auto/vehicle mechanic, audio-visual, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and painting.

The incumbent may also be required to supervise a team of maintenance technicians and/or supervise and inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with manufacturer’s specifications when required.

The incumbent plans and prepares preventive maintenance programs in the area of expertise, and assists other Maintenance Team members in the completion of various projects.

Essential qualifications:

  • Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language.
  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

    Education:
  • Recognized technical and/or professional certification in one the following fields: plumbing, electrical, mechanical/air conditioning
    South African NQF level 4 or greater.

    Language:
  • Fluency in English (written and oral)

    Experience:
  • Recent experience* working in general maintenance and with troubleshooting home and/or office maintenance issues
  • Recent experience* in at least one of the following fields: A/C repair; plumbing, electrical repairs
  • Recent experience* in use of computers including MS Office and internet research skills
  • Recent experience is defined as a minimum of three (3) years within the last 7 years.

    Rated Requirements
  • The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed.
  • Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment

    Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations/procedures
  • Knowledge of codes and standards in South Africa
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance management concepts and procedures:
  • Maintaining supplies and inventories
  • Maintaining service records
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance repair concepts and procedures in one or more of the following areas:
  • Electrical
  • Carpentry
  • Plumbing
  • Air conditioning
  • Residential appliances
  • Abilities
  • Effective Interactive communication – oral and written
  • Ability to complete and relay facts related to incidents (flooding, damages, etc.)
  • Ability to co-ordinate conflicting priorities, perform to tight deadlines and prioritize work
  • Ability to use computers (Outlook, word)
  • Ability to diagnose and solve basic technical problems
  • Ability to supervise contract trades and other resource personnel

    Asset Qualifications:

  • Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. If candidates meet the factors listed in the asset qualifications, they must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their covering letter and CV.
  • Experience working in a general maintenance position at a diplomatic mission, government agency or multinational company
  • Experience with supervision of maintenance team or contractors
  • Relevant training in carpentry and/or masonry, audio-visual, and/or painting.
  • Knowledge of auto/vehicle mechanics
  • French (working knowledge)
    Organizational Needs: -

    Operational Requirements:

  • Must be able to
    work overtime as required (sometimes at short notice);
  • Paid leave & vacation might be limited during the high season i.e. from 01July until 15 September
  • Valid South African driver’s license

    Condition(s) of Employment:

  • South African citizenship, holder of a valid South Africa residence permit or otherwise legally able to work at the High Commission (please note The High Commission of Canada does not sponsor work authorizations directly or indirectly).
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status Clearance.
  • Please note that the Reliability Status Clearance must be maintained throughout your employment at the Embassy as failure to do so may result in dismissal. This includes a criminal and credit background check.
  • Ability to meet the medical requirements as defined by the employer. Successful candidate(s) may be required to undergo a medical evaluation.
