Codename

A codename is a name given to a product while it is in development and does not officially have a name. For example, "Chicago" was the codename given to Microsoft Windows 95 while it was being developed.

Should I use "codename," "code-named," or "codenamed" in my writing?

When the word is used as a noun, you should be using "codename" or "codenamed" in your writing. When used as a verb, you should use "code-named" with a hyphen in your writing.
