Purpose of the role:
The role will support CABI Africa project managers in fulfilling their standard monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tasks and implementing social science research – particularly evaluation research.
The work activities will be focussed on data collection, management and analysis
including design of survey instruments, primary data collection at field level as well as on-line management of data for CABI Africa projects and programmes, in particular Plantwise.
This will include the use of the Plantwise Online Management System (POMS), ensuring that all available data are correctly stored in the POMS and analysed and reported for better
decision making.
S/he will also conduct periodic, data analyses to produce summaries and
reports on programme operations to facilitate milestone updates.
The M&E Assistant will lead data collection teams in the field, organising survey operations, and will support study
design as well as implementation, analysis and write-up.
Key accountabilities:
Support the timely collection of all required information (e.g., activities conducted,number of farmers reached, personnel trained, plant clinics established, etc.) from
country teams with clear timelines on collection, aggregation, and reporting, and facilitate the entry of this information in the POMS within the Plantwise knowledge bank;
Conduct specific desk reviews and basic analyses of the available data in the POMS,
including but not limited to: using validated data to assess changes over time in plant doctor performance on diagnosis and recommendations, assessing the frequency of
plant clinic operations and farmer attendance, assessing gender-associated patterns in
clinic operations, identifying problems with the use of the prescription forms by plant
doctors, etc.;
Prepare drafts of narrative documents (reports, working papers, articles, briefs), status reports and tracking tables for various projects and programmes as required;
Contribute to study design and provide assistance in the design of additional data
collection tools and reporting formats for various projects and programmes as required;
Convert surveys/ questionnaires to ODK, establish systems to collate data and
manage
data as it is collected including implementation of quality checks
Lead field work teams to carry out data collection and data entry, support analysis in
evaluation studies led by the Global M&E group and social scientists in the region, for
projects and programmes as required;
Prepare illustrative and graphical presentations to illustrate descriptive statistics and other data analysis for projects and programmes as required;
Adhere to CABI policies and procedures at the Centre, including HR procedures, health
and safety requirements, financial and project management procedures, and IPR
procedures
Canditate Profile
We are seeking a dynamic agricultural professional with strong field experience. He/she should be experienced on applied research and development particularly in developing countries.
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation concepts, including the logframe, results
chains and theory of change approaches to project management
Scientific expertise in agriculture and social science
Familiarity with data management and analysis tools is desirable (knowledge of
SPSS, R or Stata or Excel)
Knowledgeable and experienced in designing online surveys using Open Data Kit
(ODK), or any other online data collection tools
Experience in designing survey tools and carrying out surveys
Experience supervising teams in data collection and entry
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and an eye for detail
Able to explain technical concepts in simple and user-friendly ways to those who
are encountering them for the first time
Education & Qualifications
Master’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline (e.g. M&E, agricultural
disciplines, statistics)
Project management qualifications will be considered an added advantage
Experience
At least 3 years’ experience in monitoring and evaluation data collection
At least 2 year experience in a data management/information role related to a
scientific discipline
Personal Characteristics

Willingness to undertake accompanied and unaccompanied international travel
Good personal organisational skills;
Able to work independently and remain focussed
Ability to interact and work with communities in rural settings
Ability to deliver within strict deadlines
