Main Purpose of Job:

At an exciting time in Ghanaian politics, the Political Officer will play a vital role in the High Commission’s Political and Governance team. They will lead networking, analysis and project work to support the High Commission’s engagement with government, parliament, civil society and traditional leaders on high profile and often sensitive political, legislative and human rights issues.

The successful candidate will draw on their existing network, and build new contacts, to deliver high quality political and legal analysis on key legislative issues in support of UK diplomacy.

They will work with Government of Ghana, local and international CSOs, and FCDO colleagues in London and at Post to build a portfolio of human rights and justice sector projects. And they will support a wide range of high profile diplomatic work including visits and briefings.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Networking: Bring to the role, and build upon, a network of contacts with parliament, government, civil society, the legal sector, media organisations, traditional and religious leaders, and other human rights actors, across a range of political and human rights issues in support of High Commission objectives.

  • Political and legal analysis: Deliver political and legal analysis on key issues, and develop policy advice for the High Commission and London.

  • Project development and implementation: Develop a portfolio of human rights and justice sector project work, working closely with colleagues across the BHC, the Open Societies and Human Rights Directorate, and other donors. Specific project work will include facilitating pro bono support from UK lawyers to Ghana’s legal system, including the AG’s office.

  • Visits: Build impactful visit programmes for Minister, senior officials, and the BHC
    leadership team in Ghana.

  • Relations with traditional institutions: Develop an engagement plan which includes regular meetings and visits to sustain BHC relations with key traditional and religious leaders.

  • Correspondence: Manage correspondence from external stakeholders (including on visas) ensuring timely and appropriate communications. Work with the High Commissioner’s Outer Office on managing advice and replies to invitations

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Excellent written and spoken English.

  • A law degree from a recognised tertiary institution.

  • Three years experience working on human rights issues, and an extensive existing network among human rights activists.

  • A strong understanding of Ghanaian government structures, the political agenda and international interest in Ghana.

  • Ability to work effectively within a small team and demonstrable experience of collaboration, empowering others and strong team work.

  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and influencing skills; confidence in dealing with government officials at all levels. An understanding of institutional protocols.

  • Strong political and legal analysis skills.

  • Confidence to deal with sensitive issues using tact and discretion.

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Knowledge of UK government/civil service structures would be an advantage;

  • Experience of UN human rights human rights system.
