Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities) The AA Masonry Team Leader will be the responsible person for scheduling and delivery of Masonry, cement rendering and brick laying works across the British High Commission Estate.
They will conduct themselves and ensure all members of the Masonry team safely perform Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, design, construction and inspection of buildings and masonry structures across the British High Commission estate.
They will ensure a high level of workmanship and standards.
They will lead their team in upskilling and training ensuring the highest of standards is applied in their work.
Roles and Responsibilities
50% Masonry
Carry out planned maintenance activities, projects, refurbishments and react to building breakdowns or faults in a timely, professional & customer focused manner.
Execute repairs and works safely and in accordance with the quality standards of the FCDO, industry best practice, British standards and Kenyan building regulations (National Construction Authority (NCA))
Technical reports, accurate time frames for completion of works, outlining all resources required, start date, end date, project milestones and dependencies.
Safely elect and inspect scaffoldings for works within the range of 3meters to enable work safely.
Lead and mentor colleagues in masonry methods including design, construction, inspection & Fault finding.
Liaise with technical & non-technical colleagues to provide updates on works progress in a suitable language that is understood by all parties.
Actively contribute to safe working practices and ensure all work is undertaken safely by self and others
Identify materials required and create work package(s) for refurbishment, improvement, renewal and re-building to ensure all constructions meets the construction compliance standards of the FCDO and the Kenyan National Construction Authority (NCA)
Produce comprehensive bills of materials and estimates of costs for high quality masonry materials and labour .
Demonstrate continuous improvement in all areas of work to achieve best value for money, safety compliance and standards of build.
Typical Duties May Include
Routine buildings maintenance,design for small projects, road /path construction, inspection, undertaking full building constructions / modification, repairs and replacement in residential and office buildings and special locations (swimming pools etc.)
Working at height and outside work may be required on occasion including on high risk plant (e.g. Sewerage Plant).
10% Scheduling
Agree programme of works, surveys and completion reports with the lead Foreman ensuring projects and maintenance is completed on time.
Setting programme of works for Masonry team and execute annual maintenance to ensure the upkeep of the British High Commission estate
Provide clear guidance and demonstrate best practice in work to the others in his team
First point of contact for complaint resolution and updating with the customer through the Corporate Services Helpdesk (CSHelpdesk) for masonry Requests
Coordinate with the TWG Admin Officer on job allocations to the masonry Team
5% Continuous Improvement
Conduct market research on new products and techniques for masonry team
Work with suppliers on product quality and usage to ensure correct application is practiced in the teams work
Follow market leads, and remain up to date to changes to the British And Kenyan standards ensuring they are appropriately skilled as well as their team.
5% Health and Safety Compliance
Support the Health and Safety Officer in complete self-assessment checks on property compliance works
Support the Health and Safety Office on filing and record keeping to ensure documentation is available for audit checks
30% Line Management
Set direction for the team and plan out work assignments to team members
Support team members in skill development
Coordinate monthly team and individual meetings to track progress against set goals
Provide regular constructive feedback ensuring any areas of improvement are addressed promptly.
Follow the terms and conditions of employment policies in the delivery of their line management role
Resources Managed (Staff and Expenditure)
Line Manage 4 masons
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Can demonstrate at least 4 years of hands on masonry / brick laying work experience.
IT / Computer literate; familiar with Microsoft softward and Outlook
Holder of valid drivers licence with at least 3 years clean driving record. A driver’s test will be conducted before offer of employment.
Line Management or Team Leadership experience
Good communication skills, attention to detail and initiative, as well as good customer service skills
A flexible approach and good team working skill
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Grade 1, Artisan or Craft certificate in Masonry or equivalent building course modules.
Brick laying plastering and tiling experience
Civil works experience
Able to Multi-Skill. The applicant should list any other technical skills and experience they have in plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, etc.

The team leader will have access to a laptop that will permit working from home or in the field as required to deliver their role.
The majority of the work hours will be spent physically
Hours of work are 44 hours per week
Monday – Thursday 0730-1730
Friday 0730-1630
Any Other Information
Members of staff are entitled to paid annual leave, which is earned, from the day they commence employment.
Entitlements are as follows:
Grade AA - 25 days
In addition to annual leave, the BHC normally observes no fewer than 9 and no more than 14 Kenyan and British public and religious holidays in a year.
These vary from year to year and are at the discretion of the High Commissioner. A list of holidays is published each

The British High Commission will never request any payment or fees to apply for a position.
Employees recruited locally by the British High Commission in Nairobi are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law in Kenya.
It is essential that the applicants already have the right to live and work in Kenya without the need to apply for a work permit.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
