Main Purpose of Job:

The International Academy Regional Learning Teams are based across the globe. Through a network of L&D Advisers with specialist L&D skills and knowledge, we help provide solutions to the learning and development needs for all staff on the FCDO platform overseas.

L&D Advisers partner with leadership at our Embassies and High Commissions around the world (Posts) and geographical Directorates in the UK, to ensure learning is based on clear performance outcomes, aligned to UK government priorities.

International Academy L&D Advisers work to ensure learning activities are designed to best-practice L&D standards and based on solid research, are part of learning programmes, effective in meeting specific objectives, and ensure we are building healthy learning cultures within the workplace, where capability can thrive. We work at a fast pace and partner with other colleagues in HR, to ensure organisational impact.

We work flexibly and adept at dealing with change and ambiguity. We are skilful at working across cultures and resourceful, to ensure we add value and build capability, even when we meet the unexpected!

We partner with 41 number of Posts in the region, including some of the most important priority posts in our network. Our L&D Advisers are the front line, customer focused L&D specialists who are skilled in business partnering, facilitation and design, to support the UK Government teams across the world to be ‘at their best’ in delivering our objectives.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Partner strategically with senior stakeholders and team leaders at specific Posts across the region, to identify impactful performance outcomes working over a 6/12-month period, for maximum impact on organisational performance.

  • Help Posts plan strategic learning strategies and solutions to meet those outcomes, drawing on all relevant resources, internal and external and where appropriate to partner with HR colleagues to ensure alignment across the region.

  • Encourage leaders to role model the importance of learning, applying the 70-20-10 principles.

  • Empower and support Posts to develop and lead their own L&D strategy, signposting to relevant L&D resources, facilitating International Academy programmes and sharing best L&D practice, to help build organisational capability.

  • Focus on building ‘communities of practice’ across Posts and within the region to
    ensure peer to peer, ongoing learning.

  • Evaluate the impact of our work across the region, engaging with our Business Intelligence team to ensure all learning is evaluated, based on outcomes, and maintain accurate management information and data.

  • Where appropriate, design blended learning solutions, liaising with subject matter experts and other stakeholders to ensure learning is fit for purpose, based on robust content, and ensure it has the desired organisational impact.

  • Facilitate learning sessions both virtually and face-to-face, across a number of topic areas to support global, regional and local Post needs.

  • Provide coaching and mentoring support where necessary in support of change leadership and signpost to the International Academy and wider government learning, to meet specific needs.

  • Work with other International Academy colleagues in other locations on priority projects that are aligned to the International Academy business plan and meet organisational needs for the FCDO and UK Government

    The role will require some travel on a needs basis within the region.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Min 5 years in a L&D and/or OD environment either public or private sector

  • Excellent consultative and partnering skills

  • Excellent English language skills

  • Able to communicate and facilitate face to face groups effectively

  • Excellent digital skills to be able to support learning activity virtually

  • Learning design skills to devise face to face and virtual learning solutions

  • Understanding of modern workplace learning best practice

  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment

  • Able to travel as and when required across Africa region

  • A passion and enthusiasm for developing people

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Professional qualifications in L&D, OD or equivalent
