    Main purpose of job:

  • You will join the British Embassy Juba’s dynamic Political team.
  • This team is at the centre of the Embassy’s work supporting the UK-South Sudan bilateral relationship, including UK efforts to support the promotion of human rights in South Sudan and the implementation of the peace process.
  • This is an exciting new role, designed to support the Embassy’s work on human rights issues and on gender and the UN Women Peace and Security agenda.
  • The promotion of universal human rights, including the equal rights of women and girls, and women’s participation in the peace process, are key elements of the Embassy’s work.
  • You will need to be motivated, with a demonstrated commitment to human rights in South Sudan, and strong analytical skills and the ability to develop a diverse network.
  • As an integral part of the team, you will need to be flexible and there will be opportunities to gain experience in other areas, particularly in relation to event planning and communications.

    Roles and responsibilities:

    Context

  • The UK is committed to supporting the implementation of the peace process in South Sudan, including the participation of women, and to promoting the human rights of all people in South Sudan.
  • The UK is a leading international donor (both humanitarian and conflict mitigation), a member of the Troika (UK, US and Norway), a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which regularly addresses issues concerning human rights in South Sudan, and has deployed up to 400 troops to the UN Mission (UNMISS).

    Responsibilities
  • In support of the Second Secretary Political & Human Rights and the rest of the Political team, you will:
  • Provide accurate, reliable and timely information, analysis and reporting on the human rights situation in South Sudan and, as relevant, international humanitarian law.
  • Implement and further develop the Embassy’s strategies on human rights and Women Peace and Security, working closely with colleagues from across all UK Government departments.
  • Assist in developing strong networks of women leaders in their fields in South Sudan.
  • Develop relationships with a diverse range of actors on human rights and women’s participation in the peace process, including members of the Government and opposition parties, civil society, national and international NGOs, the media, relevant UN bodies (e.g. UNMISS and UN Women), and other diplomatic missions. .
  • Deliver effective outreach and communications on key messages, including radio, press and social media, on UK priorities and activities on human rights and Women Peace and Security.
  • Events planning to mark important international days such as human rights day and international women’s day.
  • There will be opportunities to take on other ad-hoc work as a member of
    a busy political team, and you will be required to assist with administrative tasks.

    Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and/or relevant professional experience of, promotion and protection of human rights in South Sudan, and strong analytical skills.
  • Good knowledge of the current context in South Sudan, including human rights challenges.
  • A diverse network of relevant contacts, or the ability to build such a network rapidly.

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Relevant qualification (e.g. BA, Masters) in law, human rights, international relations or a related field.
  • Relevant professional experience in relation to Women Peace and Security, e.g. in relation to women’s empowerment or gender-based violence / protection work.
