Main purpose of job
As the United Kingdom seeks to work ever more closely with countries across Africa following the recent visit of the UK Prime Minister to the continent, and as the UK leaves the EU at the end of March 2019- the UK’s Department for International Trade is recruiting new roles in Ethiopia to ensure the UK delivers new, successful commercial partnerships for the future.
This role will identify, and project manage co-ordination of both UK business and UK Government support for the top 5-10 bilateral commercial opportunities opening up to UK businesses in Ethiopia over the next 5 years.
The role will be one of a professional Project Manager- co-ordinating, planning and facilitating commercial partnerships and promoting opportunities, working hand-in-hand with the UK business community and our Ethiopian counterparts.
Excellent project management skills and experience are required, as well as recent private sector experience and a history of managing commercial negotiations and commercial partnerships.
The candidate needs to be driven, high energy and ambitious with an excellent commercial background and recent commercial experience in the private sector.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
To lead the project management of the UK’s commercial agenda, specifically on the top 5-10 business opportunities in Ethiopia over the next 5 years.
To complete market research and other studies to identify both supply and demand opportunities from both the UK and Ethiopia for UK exports and UK outward direct investment.
To then define and develop clearly articulated priority opportunities, clear project plans and coherent and comprehensive target lists of the UK businesses who can deliver best in class products and services for/to the opportunities identified.
To deliver excellent co-ordination of UK businesses, through partnerships and consortia to ensure the UK puts its ‘best foot forward’ to work with Ethiopian businesses and the Ethiopian Government to provide world-class UK products and services into the vibrant Ethiopian market.
To provide high-quality commercial briefing to UK Senior Civil Servants, Ministers, Trade Envoys and Business Ambassadors- showing a deep understanding of the commercial elements of each opportunity or transaction (including for example, analysis of the Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet within a company report)
To deliver impactful front-line support to UK business’ commercial discussions- both in
Ethiopia and in the United Kingdom.
To deliver Line Management of B and C band staff if required, as well as the potential line management of multi-disciplinary virtual teams for each opportunity.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Postgraduate degree and/or undergraduate degree and other professional qualification.
Recent commercial experience in the private sector.
Excellent commercial understanding of contracts and financial statements
Proven project management skills and experience
Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate and bring teams along.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills,
Excellent organisational and self-management skills to respond effectively to tight – and changing – deadlines and priorities;
Sound knowledge of MS Office and project management tools.
The ability to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy;
A positive “can-do” attitude that can see way through challenges.
Language requirements:
Language: Fluent written and spoken English is critical to this role, given the requirement to deal professionally with UK stakeholders and contribute to Ministerial Briefing.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
Experience of working in the public sector.
