British Embassy Chevening Officer - Maternity Cover Jobs in Ethiopia
Main purpose of job: To lead on the marketing and administration of the Chevening Scholarship and Fellowship programmes in Ethiopia. This includes overall responsibility for marketing the scheme to young leaders across the country, running the annual recruitment processes, and maintaining ongoing and productive engagement with the network of dynamic alumni nationwide.
Roles and responsibilities:
Chevening is the UK Foreign, Development & Commonwealth Office’s flagship global scholarship programme. Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2018/19, Chevening identifies future leaders across 160 countries and territories, providing them with an opportunity to study a postgraduate degree in the UK. Chevening has a 50,000 strong global alumni network.
This dynamic position in the British Embassy Addis Ababa will focus on delivering the growing programme in Ethiopia, which also includes two short-term ‘fellowship’ programmes for senior officials in leadership and in the media sector, as well as the core scholarships programme.
As part of this, the successful candidate will have the exciting opportunities to increase our engagement with current and past Chevening scholars and fellows across the country. They will sit in the Embassy’s political section but work closely with staff right across the Embassy from the Ambassador down. The ideal candidate will be confident, energetic, creative and organised.
Specific duties include:
Scholar Recruitment:
Managing the Chevening application process, including downloading applications, assisting with shortlisting, arranging interviews, updating the Chevening online application system with short-lists and interview results and organising pre-departure briefings.
Liaising with the team at the Chevening Secretariat in London to coordinate the application and selection process.
Sitting on interview panels.
Programme Outreach and Marketing
Working with the embassy communications and soft power team to produce written and visual content promoting the programme for social media, press and radio.
Identifying other ways to promote Chevening, such as attending university fairs and other outreach events.
Monitoring the Chevening marketing budget, keeping records of promotional material, contacting suppliers for quotations and following up that new orders are produced according to the Chevening branding guidelines.
Sharing information about the scholarships to all colleagues in the embassy to foster embassy-wide promotion of the scholarships.
Programme Administration:
Adhering to deadlines and requests set by the Scholarships Unit and Chevening Secretariat in London, such as submitting annual programme, marketing and alumni plans, and country briefings for the Reading Committee.
Responding to enquiries regarding the scheme and acting as point of contact with the embassy team on Chevening-related marketing activities, application process and alumni events.
Responding to requests for information or insight from TSU or the Secretariat.
Maintaining positive relationships with applicants and award recipients before, during and after their award.
Alumni Engagement:
Updating and maintaining the database of Chevening alumni. Promoting and actively using social media to engage with alumni.
Establishing and developing an effective Chevening alumni network, organising a series of alumni events from concept to delivery and an annual welcome-home event.
Successfully bidding for alumni engagement funding opportunities and managing budgets associated with these.
Keeping London regularly up to date with alumni engagement work in country.
Finance:
Ensure all financial issues are dealt with affectively and in line with policy, including ensuring costs are charged to the correct budget and meeting policy guidelines.
Explore whether any partnerships can be developed with the commercial sector in Ethiopia to further grow the Chevening scholarships scheme.
Fellowships:
Oversee the marketing, outreach and selection and administration of fellows alongside the scholarship programme.
Work with London on the bidding and procurement process for new and renewing fellowship programmes and engaging with the chosen university supplier to ensure the effective delivery of the fellowship programme.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
Responsibility for a small marketing budget (approx. 100,000 ETB)
Responsibility for ensuring other financial transactions related to the programme are conducted in line with guidance.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Strong interpersonal, communication, organisational and presentation skills.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills.
2 years’ experience working in a team in an office environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Amharic.
Strong customer focus and team working skills.
Strong IT skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and web-based applications.
Interest in UK and local country relations.
Personal experience with UK education would be an advantage but is not essential.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
Other Ethiopian languages would be an advantage.
