Job Purpose

  • AVSI is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified person for the position of Communications Assistant to develop and implement the Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project communication strategy, to contribute to the implementation of the project’s communication, visibility and branding among key audiences and at events.

  • Reporting to the Communications & Fundraising Manager, the successful candidate will be based in Kampala District with minimal travels outside the project implementation area.

    Specific Responsibilities

    Primary Responsibilities the Communication Assistant shall undertake and deliver:

  • Develop a communications strategy for the Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project.

  • To enhance the awareness, understanding, and knowledge of key audiences.

  • Change behavior and perceptions where necessary, and help achieve overall program objectives.

  • Conceptualize, design and develop campaign materials on Skilling in Agripreneurship for increased Youth Employment” – SAY project.

  • Project with appropriate and relevant messages tailored for key audiences using various formats as appropriate such as text, graphics, imageries, info graphics, video, printed materials, etc.

  • Specify appropriate communication channels, dissemination methods and media such as video, print, online media, traditional media, and social media, among others to effectively communicate key messages to specific audiences.

  • Design standard publication layouts for the project.

  • Support communication activities through knowledge management, information exchange and building capacity of the project team in communication matters.

  • Enable appropriate access to information, visibility materials and proper storage/management of such materials/equipment.

  • Gather content for change stories on the project as per plan.

  • Ensure professional relationships with the local media.

  • Perform other duties within the area of responsibility as requested by supervisor.

    Requirements

  • Preferably degree in Mass Communications; Development Communication; Communications, Journalism, or other relevant fields.

  • At least two years of relevant experience in developing, designing, production and
    publishing/dissemination of communication products using various media, organizing and producing major events of regional nature.

  • Relevant experience in working for international organizations or consultancy assignments, especially in strategic communications planning.

  • Knowledge of Monitoring and Evaluation.

    General Competencies

  • Ability to work in a team in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Ability to multi-task and work irregular and long hours.

  • Sound knowledge of AVSI Foundation.

  • Proficiency in standard computer applications: the objective of this assignment is to provide professional visual and photography, which can be used for external communication and publication purposes.

  • Willingness to be based in rural setting with frequent travel within the implementation area.

  • Cultural sensitivity, patience and flexibility.

    Required Language

  • English fluency with excellent oral and writing skills is required. Knowledge of Kiswahili/French is a distinct advantage and any of the local languages.
