An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Packaging Technologist at NATIONAL BRANDS LIMITED Bryanston, Tea/Coffee and Creamer/Biscuits/Snacks.

Line Manager: Regional Packaging Manager

Job Specification:

Key Performance Areas:

Develop packs for innovation and translate a prototype concept into a fully commercialized package, working closely with suppliers

Application of necessary packaging development skills to ensure “Design for Quality” packaging designs which performs well at all stages in the Supply Chain

Create new die lines in conjunction with packaging suppliers for new packaging designs

Conduct packaging / product compatibility and stability test

Responsible for Project Management of new product packaging initiatives and strong working knowledge of supply cost structures, techniques for cost avoidance and impact on the demand cost structure

Drawing up of complete and accurate packaging material specifications

Ensure that correct specifications are loaded along with artwork

Manage and lead change management process on current product improvement initiatives

Evaluate current range, offer and make suggestions of how packaging can be improved, to ensure optimal packaging design and functionality

Conduct research and benchmarking based on global packaging trends and sustainability for new packaging development

Evaluate new technologies in the industry

Liaising with all relevant buyers regarding the packaging requirements of their products

Sourcing new packaging from representatives at various companies depending on the nature of the product

Checking all the various stages, from initial concept, mock-ups, DTP’s and final artwork

Where needed attend print runs to sign off packaging for colour, layout and design

Participating in environmental and recycling initiatives

Manage, plan

plant and packaging production trials with cross-functional teams

Technical support on Quality related issues

Lead problem solving on packaging material and machine interface

Interface across functions e.g. Marketing, Production, QA, Site and Project Engineering Teams

Manage and update packaging cost saving tracker

Development and adaptation of packaging testing for the FMCG environment and develop inspection methods for incoming packaging materials

Operational waste management and Bill Of Materials validations

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:

Minimum 8 years’ experience within packaging development

Minimum 5 years’ operating at a Senior Level

Qualifications:

Science/Engineering Qualification or Advanced Diploma in Packaging essential

Vertical form, fill and seal (VFSS) / Roll- wrap and Horizontal form, fill and seal (HFSS) experience

Knowledge of packaging equipment / high-speed equipment

Experience in new product development processes and milestone planning

Additional Requirements:

Knowledge of SAP, will be an advantage

Knowledge of the South African packaging industry essential

Knowledge of QMS systems and HACCP will be an added advantage

Packaging materials across various disciplines and formats, e.g. plastics, corrugates, paper, laminates, flexible films, etc.

Packaging conversion processes such as blow moulding, injection moulding, lamination, cartons, extrusion, printing processes and colour technology

Expertise in carton erection and cartooning, collation, shrink wrapping, case packing – corrugate, case sealing and palletizing and date coding

Pallet optimization and utilization using CAPE PACK

Maintain Bills of Materials for packaging changes
