The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian Government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the PositionThe Australian Government has a new and temporary humanitarian program in East Africa and is recruiting an officer to support its implementation and administration on a fixed-term contract for 12 months, with a possible renewal. Working under limited direction, the Humanitarian Officer will support the program management and administration of Australia’s humanitarian program in East Africa to respond to the food security crisis affecting the region.
The position is at the LE5 level with a commencing monthly base salary of KES 230,348.00. The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of entitlement to work in Kenya by virtue of citizenship or relevant work permit.
The key responsibilities of the position may include, but are not limited to:Manage moderately complex humanitarian programs, including contributing to strategic planning, budget (analyse, coordination and reporting) risk management, monitoring and evaluation, reporting on partner performance and identifying innovations and program improvements.
Provide advice and technical expertise in specific areas of program work related to the humanitarian portfolio, including advice on future proposals.
Build and maintain effective relationships with key humanitarian actors including government, donors, multilateral organisations and NGOs.
Collate, analyse and
report on developments relating to the food security crisis in the region.
Coordinate and participate in contract management including developing scope, managing tendering processes, and monitoring contract performance.
Assist in coordination activities, including coordinating input into briefing and reports and participating in external donor coordination meetings.
Support visits by Australian officials and manage elements of VIP visits relating to Australia’s humanitarian assistance in East Africa.
Perform backup duties for officers in the Political and Economic team and perform any other duties, as required.
Experience/Behaviours
A minimum of 5-10 years humanitarian experience with a donor or multilateral organisation (applicants who only have NGO experience will not be considered)
Excellent analysis and written skills (these will be tested at interview stage)
Monitoring and evaluation experience and an ability to synthesise information and draft reports
Highly motivated and able to work independently and within a team
Must be proficient in the Microsoft suite of applications (Word, Excel etc)
Must be a Kenyan citizen or have a valid work permit to work in Kenya
