Job DescriptionExternal Vacancy AnnouncementThe Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.
The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).
AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.
AHRI would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Associate Researcher I working as bacteriologist under Bacterial & Viral Disease Directorate
Main Duties and Responsibilities

Tasks
Advancing research in Bacterial diseases
Understand pathology and epidemiology of relevant bacterial and fungal pathogens by using advanced molecular and diagnostic methods and support translational studies
Conduct research on bacterial and fungal pathogenesis and related virulence factors
Employ biotechnology or collaborate with biotechnologist in using cells for researching treatment of bacterial and fungal
Defining the genetic determinants of Antimicrobial drug resistance
Demonstrates innovative design, development and execution of research projects through literature review and scientific teamwork.
Contributes to the execution of design, optimization, verification, troubleshooting and validation of current and new assays
and provides input into the design, direction, implementation and interpretation of experimental studies
Conduct research on the structure, function, ecology, biotechnology and genetics of bacteria and funguses
Specialized Skills
Conventional and automated culture for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
Maintain and purify bacteria, phage stocks, cell culture
Prepare and assay bacteriophage lysates
Basic molecular biology tests ( DNA and RNA purification, PCR, qPCR , cloaning and Plasmid amplification) and procedures to detect, identify and characterize Bacteria and funguses
Other Duties
Manage specific project and/or field activities might be required
Perform laboratory or field activities as might be assigned
Represent the directorate on admin related issues
Job Requirements
Education
BSc, MSc, MPH, PhD Degree in biology, pharmacy, biomedical science medical laboratory, nursing microbiology, infectious disease, public health, health related fields background in Biomedical fields is advantage
Experience
BSc, 2 years of relevant experience and 4 publications
MSc, 2 years of relevant experience and 3 publications
PhD, 0 Years of experience /research in biomedical health is advantageous
Degree in public health, monitoring and evaluation, project management background in Biomedical fields is advantage AND 2 years of experience preferably in research and/or project management
