Job Description

Call for Researcher II Positions
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.

The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).

AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

The Mycobacterial Diseases Research Directorate of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has 3 Researcher II positions available for eligible and competent researchers who will take part in a TB research project (TBGEN Africa).

TBGEN Africa is a multi-country consortium project funded by the African Academy of Sciences that investigates the genetic determinants of mycobacterial disease in different geographical areas in Africa.

The project will enroll newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients upon informed consent and isolate the responsible strain of mycobacterium from their sputum. At the same time, blood samples will be collected from the patients.

Whole genome sequences of both the patient and the TB isolate will be compared across the different populations to identify patterns that are associated with disease. The information obtained is expected to lead to new knowledge on co-evolution and TB pathogenesis critical for development of new strategies in TB control.
