The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality, policy-relevant research on population, health, education
Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action to improve the lives of all Africans.
A Research Scientist at APHRC was awarded an International Engagement Fellowship from the
Wellcome Trust, running from January 2018 to December 2019.
The Fellowship is focusing on
public engagement (PE) on the right to food and nutrition security in urban poor settings,
Kenya.
The aim of the public engagement from the perspective of the Wellcome Trust is to help people connect with science and health concepts in ways accessible and relevant to them,
hence create a culture of public-informed research for greater public trust and acceptance.
Public engagement with research and health concepts is an innovative tool for enhancing
impact, hence critical to realizing APHRC’s vision of transforming lives in Africa.
The objective for public engagement in the fellowship is to explore the nexus between the right to food and nutrition as stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the Bill of Rights in the Kenyan Constitution and the lived experiences as evidenced by research, among urban poor populations in Kenya.
The public engagement will help explore and enhance the understanding of the concept of the right to food and nutrition, and explore ideas on ways of bridging the gap between the lived experiences in urban poor settings as evidenced by research, and aspirations demonstrated in the Bill of Rights in the Kenyan Constitution.
Part of the project involves awarding community-based organizations with sub-grants to develop innovative ideas and strategies for public engagement in the form of performing arts.
Eight organizations in various slum locations within Nairobi, were awarded grants and will be carrying out activities between September and November 2018.
In this regard, APHRC invites proposals from an experienced professional to take still photos, record and produce a high quality 3-4 minute video with subtitles highlighting the community organized groups activities.
The video will be
Each of the 8 groups will be covered for at least 3 days. APHRC shall provide any additional briefing information concerning this assignment when needed and shall provide on the ground assistance.
