APHRC Consultancy Opportunities

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, nongovernmental organization that carries out policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.



APHRC is looking for a consultant with experience in gender and equity and maternal and child health (MNCH) to conduct a training for researchers doing implementation research supported by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) program. Gender and equity is a key area of assessment in the IMCHA program.


Through this training researchers will be able to identify gender and equity challenges and how to address them so as to improve MNCH outcomes.


APHRC Consultancy Gender and Equity Trainer Opportunities


The specific objectives of the IMCHA program are:


  • Identify and maximize opportunities for policy influence for MNCH issues
  • Influence policy and programmatic decisions and actions on MNCH in the target countries
    informed by evidence provided by IRTs
  • Build consensus for MNCH issues to drive policy outreach at national regional and global levels.
  • Develop and agree on a regional MNCH agenda together with the legislative and economic bodies.
  • Strengthen the capacity of IRTs for long-term and systematic engagement with decision-makers in their respective countries for more effective uptake of the evidence they generate


    Job Description (responsibilities):


    The assignment requires a consultant to develop a training curriculum on gender and equity and train researchers working on MNCH to identify gender and equity challenges and how to address them in their implementation research projects. The training objectives are to:


  • Create awareness on gender concepts and how they apply to research and development
    programs.
  • Discuss key gender and equity issues in MNCH with specific references to the research areas covered by the IMCHA program.
    Train the researchers on field tools that are applicable for analyzing and addressing gender
    issues in MNCH and in facilitating community research on the same.
  • Support the researchers to develop monitoring and evaluation indicators for gender outcomes in the research areas to inform the development of tools to analyze and report on the data.
  • Conduct a participatory training that uses different methods including stories, case studies, group activities to engage the participants.

    Scope of assignment

  • Outline the topics for the training including the methodology and approach.
  • Prepare the training agenda, materials including presentations, innovative and practical exercises.
  • Develop a pre-test and post-test tool to be administered to the training participants.
  • Document the training process and submit a final training report including the evaluation results (pre and post-training).

    Outputs/deliverables

    Following completion of the assignment the consultant will provide:

  • A training report not exceeding 10 pages.
  • Soft copies of training materials (these includes presentations, notes related to the workshop).

    Time Frame

  • The number of days for the training to be discussed - it will be conducted during the week of November 5-8, 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya.


    Minimum qualifications required:


  • The consultant should have an advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) social sciences, public health and policy analysis with demonstrated experience in qualitative data analysis, health systems, and health policy.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with maternal, newborn and child health is necessary. The
    consultant needs to have the following experience:

  • A minimum of five years professional experience in gender equity and gender analysis for health systems and health policy
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills in gender equity
  • Preferably experience with qualitative research related to gender equity and/or maternal and child health
