Amref International University (AMIU) is looking for a qualified Academic Registrar to support the university executive officers (vice chancellor and the deputy vice chancellors), deans and heads of departments and to give strategic leadership in the academic administration of the university and to contribute advice across a wide range of internal structures
Main purpose of the job
To support the university executive officers (vice chancellor and the deputy vice chancellors), deans and heads of departments and to give strategic leadership in the academic administration of the university and to contribute advice across a wide range of internal structures
The position requires a strong leader to support growth, development of university academic programmes in line with the overarching strategic objectives
The Academic Registrar shall be appointed by the Council and shall hold office on a 3 years contract, renewable.
He/she will report to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Main duties and responsibilities
Academic Administration
To be the head of university academic administration which include management of the
academic calendar to certification for all systems supporting admission, registration and
examination
To ensure that quality standards are adhered to and facilitating staff development and capacity building
Ensure that critical process are sustained to meet the statutory requirement and university academic regulatory framework and with external regulators
Fully responsible for the accuracy, integrity and quality of students record.
Strategy Development, Policy and Execution
Develop and deliver strategy for the university academic growth and development
Provide leadership to university governing bodies and committees and contribute to
strategy development and implementation
Provide direction to ensure the critical interfaces of activity between offices are well
integrated and coordinated
University Governing Bodies Role
The role holder will chair, participate in and act as Secretary to
high-level committees
including senate committee and working groups, to develop appropriate strategies and
oversee the implementation of change.
Support the senate activities and senate committees and convocation
Legal Role
Accountability and compliance with Commission for University Educations (CUE) and
other institutional statues
Plan, organize, direct, control and oversee interpretation and implementation of academic
procedures by students and staff
Interpret and enforce polices and regulations of the university
Resource Management
Prepare and monitor annual budgets for the for the registrar’s office
Plan, manage and report budget and expenditure
Manage procurement and payment within the budget ensuring compliance with spending
rules, reviewing and authorizing expenditure
Aggressively seek and motivate for additional budget to achieve the Registrar’s office targets
Partnership and Stakeholder Management
Develop proactive relationships with relevant external stakeholder e.g. Commission for University Education, the Nursing Council of Kenya and other partners that contribute to
university academic quality and growth
Liaise with professional organizational and ensure that the senior management team is
constantly informed of strategic development and trends in students and academic related
matters
Establish a student centered culture within the Registrar’s office
Actively participate in higher education forums
Qualifications and Competencies
A post graduate qualification in Education, Management and preferably an earned PhD.
Sound knowledge and at least five (5) experience on how a universities operates
Proven leader with demonstrable experience in senior academic and administrative role in a
university or higher education institution.
Experience of leading and managing directly or indirectly large teams of people
Strong strategic skills, focusing to five years or more and with ability to effectively direct resources to university goals
An excellent understanding of University education management and the Commission for
University Education Standards, Rules and Guidelines.
Strong communication, political influencing skills to all levels of university staff and
engagement with high-level committees
Experience in managing budgets, resources allocation, planning, cost saving and service
efficiencies
