Job DescriptionAmref Health Africa, the largest African led international organization on the continent, provides training and health services to over 30 countries in Africa.
Founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa to bring critical health services to remote communities, Amref Health Africa now delivers preventative, community-based health care. With a focus on women and children, Amref Health Africa manages a full range of medical and public health programs tackling the most critical health challenges facing country focusing on three key programmatic areas:
Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (RMNCH); Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases. Gender and human resources for health are crosscutting, reflected throughout the organization’s health portfolio.
Our organization also engages in clinical outreach interventions and emergency programs including nutrition and resilience building of affected the continent: maternal and child care, HIV & TB, malaria, clean water and sanitation and surgical and clinical outreach.
Amref Health Africa partners with the Government of Ethiopia and local stakeholders to implement a diversified health project portfolios throughout the communities.
In 2019, our programs supported 174 districts, 390 health facilities and 27 health science institutions, reaching 1.6 million beneficiaries, 29,654 health professionals and 17,792 health extension workers and health development agents.
Amref Health Africa has projects in Addis Ababa, Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Oromia, SNNP, Ethiopia Somali regions and nationwide health systems strengthening interventions focusing the capacity building of the National Health Extension Program.
1. Background Information Sanitation Marketing, Agriculture, Rural Development and Transformation (SMART) is a three years project (June 2018-May 2021) that works to enhance better living conditions and resilience of hosting communities and villages in Gambella Region using community-led approach.
By increasing access to basic sanitation, better knowledge of agriculture, awareness on hygiene and sanitation practices, SMART project contributes to the improvement of health and general wellbeing of communities in six kebeles of Gambella Zuria woreda in Bonga, Karmi, Opagna, Abolecare, Bure Mikel, Abol Kebeles.
In this regard, we intend to support our work with effective Social Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) activities for better hygiene, safe water and sanitation. We would like to develop SBCC tools that considers the local culture, social norms, language, community and while being participatory and inclusive.
This hygiene and sanitation promotion (SBCC) job aid will serve as a resource materials for hygiene and sanitation promotion by Health extension workers, community health workers, and health workers prominent peoples and community sanitation and hygiene promoters
2. Objectives of the development of hygiene and sanitation promotion ToolkitThe main purpose of this consultancy is to design and develop one comprehensive practical toolkit for community health workers and the issues to be addresses include
Regional context guided by existing national and Gambella regional hygiene and sanitation SBCC tools.
The toolkit is designed like Flip Chart with multiple photos of types of latrine/improved
and modern and durable. Sanitation marketing products, slab, hand washing, wall and superstructure
Focused on prevention and control of disease due to poor hygiene and sanitation condition
Message will be focus and be tailed to attract and hold the attention of the local community
The Sanitation and hygiene toolkit will
Illustrate each message with illustration
Make it an easy quick reference for community worker
Ensure the standardize of one comprehensive job aid
The design is looks like flip chart
Social, behavioural, communication practice in hygiene and sanitation promotion on demand creation on house hold latrine construction, house hold water storage
Sanitation marketing, sanitation marketers, sanitation marketing products, market chains, the ability to purchase these san plant by community
Designed the job aid, pre-test and incorporate pre-test findings and submit soft and hard copies of the material (English and Amharic languages)
Demand creation on market chains for the sustainable supply of san-plant products
Promoting safe and improved latrine, food and hand hygiene, safe and hygienic water handling
4. Scope of Activities
Review Amref Health Africa SMART project implementing WASH components in the area and understand key behaviors such as
Food hygiene
Safe water handling
Toilet hygiene
Hand washing
Develop, contextualize and standardize one comprehensive job aid for community health workers.
5. Geographical location
This toolkit will be implement in Gambella Region Agnuak Zone six kebeles, such as Abol, Abolcare, Opagna, Buremikel, Karmi, and Bonga. The study will therefore be conducted on representative Kebeles
6. Expected Deliverable
The consultant will have the overall responsibility for the quality and timely submission of
Camera ready job aid (editable) in soft copies of the material (English and Amharic languages)
All the illustration using on the job aid in Jpg format
Job Requirements
The consultant should have an overall understanding of the National Health sector polices
The individual/group should have demonstrated experience in developing SBCC materials specifically on WASH
A minimum of four years’ experience in developing SBCC related materials
Resume/CV: Including information describing previous relevant work experience
Has also an experience of adapting materials in to Gambela context before.
Familiarity of Gambela culture with excellent understanding of WASH concepts
