Organization details The Agricultural Business Initiative Group is a social enterprise with the overall vision to contribute to ‘a competitive and sustainable agriculture and agribusiness sector in Uganda in support of equitable wealth creation in Uganda’. The aBi Group consists of two companies Limited by Guarantee; aBi Development (formerly aBi Trust) and aBi Finance.
The main focus of aBi Development is to increase agricultural production and value addition by extending matching grants and business development services (BDS) to agribusinesses, farmer organizations and intermediaries.
The grants and BDS enhance planning and management, production and business infrastructure, and upstream and downstream market linkages of producers and agribusinesses. aBi Finance expands access to business finance for agricultural producers and agribusinesses by offering to Financial Institutions (FIs), financial incentives and infrastructure that make lending to the agricultural sector more attractive and less risky.
Knowledge, Skills & Competences
Ability to think strategically and systemically; familiarity with market development approaches
Proven ability to develop practical interventions and tools and to facilitate the capacity of others to operate in accordance with good practice
Track record of managing relationships and influencing key stakeholders; able to provide evidence of successful campaigning in the SSRI space
Excellent written and spoken English
Responsibilities
Strategy & Programming Contribute to the development and implementation of aBi’s strategic and operational plans; ensuring that sustainable and socially responsible goals strategies and investments are well reflected and applying well researched, evidence informed, efficient, effective and relevant approaches
Keep abreast of contemporary research findings concerning sustainable and socially responsible strategies and investments (includes commissioning research for aBi); develop a profound understanding of the ecosystems that aBi is seeking to develop and identify opportunities for leveraging beneficial change
Support the development of aBi’s strategies, policies and plans, contributing insights relevant to SSRI and ensuring that learning from previous projects is incorporated into design
Proactively work with the aBi Development and aBi Finance teams to design funding windows to design funding windows; in particular, advising on the choice of projects, partners and interventions that will achieve SSRI targets
Support the development of aBi’s risk management framework by contributing insights relevant to SSRI; rolling out the aspects of the risk management framework to ensure risks are effectively managed from identification to assessment to mitigation
Contribute to the development and review of investment policies; apply understanding garnered from research and learning in the SSRI space to keep aBi aligned with emerging good practice
Portfolio Development Collaborate with colleagues to build a comprehensive portfolio of interventions and investment to add value and create systemic change in agribusiness and food industry sectors in Uganda; supporting economic transformation whilst also delivering sustainable and socially responsible results from our investments
Provide input to the development of calls for proposals, ensuring that content relevant to SSRI is incorporated
Work with the Heads of Portfolio and Business Development to develop tools that will accurately assess Implementing Partners (IP) capacity for SSRI; personally, participate in IP assessments and develop appropriate action plans.
Develop and implement a program of training and the production of tools, resources and standard operating procedures that will enhance staff, stakeholder and IP capacity to deliver against SSRI targets
Work collaboratively with IPs and with aBi colleagues to design projects that will boost the impact, profitability, and sustainability of IPs, and leverage beneficial change
Support the development and submission of project proposals that will achieve aBi’s impact targets; work collaboratively with colleagues to meet the exacting standards of the Procurement & Investment Committee (PIC)
In accordance with aBi’s Funding Manual, follow up on the entirety of the funding process for SSRI projects or
interventions; includes planning and preparation, appraisal, contracting, disbursement, monitoring, reporting, audit management to evaluation
Ensuring Impactful Implementation Oversee the implementation of project plans so that results are achieved, and quality projects are delivered; ensuring that learning from projects is fully utilized to maximize impact
Collaborate closely with the RMRD team to evaluate and learn from monitoring data that is that is relevant to SSRI;
Initiate strategies for widespread awareness-raising around key results and learning
Feed insights into the future design of strategies, procedures, tools and resources to support consistent delivery of good practice in SSRI
If desired results have not been achieved, identify, and implement improvements in either process or performance
Periodically review theories of change, revising as appropriate
Provide expert advice, mentoring and guidance to both staff and IPs as necessary to support quality implementation of the SSRI aspects of projects
For any projects being personally managed, ensure that good practice in end-to-end project management is implemented, and that interventions are made as required to ensure that planned results are achieved
Cooperate with and support internal and external audits; track and report on implementation of audit recommendations, includes following up with Implementing Partners as necessary
Advocacy & Communications Work collaboratively with aBi’s senior management and with the Communications team to provide thought leadership in SSRI and to develop strategies and interventions that will result in widespread change (of both opinion and action) on issues relevant to SSRI
Building on the ecosystem analysis mentioned above, identify ways in which the achievement of aBi’s SSRI agenda is dependent on influencing specific stakeholders or widespread mindset change
Develop an advocacy & communication strategy including clear goals for the required mindset shifts and any accompanying behavioral changes; develop results chains to connect planned interventions to these goals
Participate in the development and implementation of aBi’s overall Influencing and Communications Plan; eliciting the support of colleagues for driving the SSRI agenda
Take responsibility for delivering any allocated components of the communications strategy; support influencing, advocacy and communication aspects relevant to the SSRI agenda
Participate in and convene forums relevant to the SSRI agenda; driving thought leadership in SSRI and sharing /acquiring knowledge for the benefit of aBi and its stakeholders
Produce relevant sections of the annual report, and other reports required by the Management, Board, Investors, and other stakeholders; ensure that submissions are made on time and to standard
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree
Masters level qualification in field relevant to Sustainable and Socially Responsible Investment (SSRI)
Certification in Project Management (PMP/ PRINCE2) or Post Graduate diploma Project Management is desirable
Details of experience
At least 10 years proven experience in the Development Sector·
Progressive track record in successfully initiating, implementing, managing, leading and promoting private- sector based programmes of socially responsible sustainable investment in agriculture and the food industry
