Job DescriptionAESA is a renowned international consultancy company based in Brussels and which provides a wide range of services in the Agriculture and Rural Development Sector.
The company was awarded the contract to provide a technical assistance team (TAT) to support implementation of the EU-funded €15 million 4-year project ‘Health of Ethiopian Animal for Rural Development’ (HEARD).
The TAT started work in August 2020 and is responsible for supporting the Project Coordination Unit in monitoring and coordination of project activities and providing advice and assistance.
The project is implemented by 5 grantees: International Livestock Research Institute with the Ethiopian Veterinary Association; the Livestock Bureau of Amhara, Oromia and Somali NRS; and the State Ministry for Livestock Resources (SMLR).

AESA is the lead for the implementing consortium which includes three additional organizations namely VSF Suisse, VSF Belgium and the State Food and Veterinary Services of the Republic of Lithuania for this EU-HEARD technical assistance contract.
Major Activities:
Taking into account the findings of the recent evaluation of the national animal disease surveillance system conduct a comprehensive review of the current National Animal Disease Surveillance System (NADSS) and specifically assess the relevance and usefulness of the system for disease prevention and control and make practical recommendations to sustainably correct any gaps and inefficiencies;
To review the existing Animal Disease Surveillance Strategy
prepared with the support from FAO and, if required, make recommendations for its improvement so that it can continue to serve as national surveillance guideline;
To build the capacity of the surveillance workforce on NADSS
The experts will be short term and work full time.
The duty station will be Addis Ababa with visits to Amhara, Oromia and Somali NRS as required/possible. The fee rates will be negotiable
Job Requirements
Education
A degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from a recognized University and a postgraduate degree in Veterinary Epidemiology;
Training on risk analysis/assessment
Work Experience
Minimum of 10 years of senior professional experience in state or regional federal veterinary services, preferably in Eastern Africa.
Knowledge of the Ethiopian NADSS would be an advantage
Experience and or knowledge of the animal health situation of the Eastern Africa region will also be an advantage
Necessary Skills
Good working knowledge of database management systems
High level of skill in preparation of reports
Excellent organisational, planning and communication skills;
Good knowledge of the English language;
High level of skill in preparation of reports
Demonstrated ability to work in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team of experts;
Excellent oral and written communication skills
