The Aga Khan University, invites applicants for the position of Legal Officer in Legal Department.
Position Summary The Legal Officer, University will be part of an already existing legal team and will perform the functions of an in-house legal adviser dedicated to legal matters of the University.
S/he will assist the Head of Legal Affairs/General Counsel in all matters entrusted to the Legal Office of the University, ensuring that these are addressed in an effective, timely and comprehensive manner.
S/he will work In a complex educational and research led institution of higher learning with multiple internal constituencies and departments, including the network of healthcare centres which serve as teaching sites.
This is a management position where the incumbent is expected to play a proactive role in monitoring legislation and handling legal issues that have implications on AKU's operations.
Key responsibilities will include:
Preparation of legal opinions Drafting/reviewing agreements and other documents including research/grant agreements Liaising with academic heads and members of the faculty
Understanding of matters related to academic research
Ensuring regulatory compliance Handling various areas of law including corporate, taxation, banking, land, construction, employment, intellectual property, higher education, research and litigation Interacting with government departments, agencies and regulatory bodies Conducting legal research Attending management or other meetings as required
Applying effective risk management techniques and offering proactive advice on possible legal Issues
Providing advice to the Registrar and/or relevant personnel on the application of the student disciplinary code of conduct and related policies
Reviewing, augmenting and/or improving data bases and systems supporting these Excellent interpersonal, customer service and negotiation skills High degree of professional ethics and integrity
Ability to
act quickly to address a crisis situation drawing on appropriate resources Ability to adapt to new ideas and initiatives across a wide variety of issues or situations
Must be able to effectively operate and manage resources in a fast paced and dynamic environment
Strong self-management with a high level of energy and flexibility
Do such other things as the senior leadership and the General Counsel may direct
Requirements
An ideal candidate must have:
An LLB with 7-10 years relevant legal experience, preferably in a senior position within a corporate or institutional setting; Enrollment as an Advocate of the High Court;
Superior written and verbal communication skills;
Capacity for lateral thinking; Strategic thinker and planner.
A Master's degree and/or familiarity with certain general laws (e.g. company law, contract law, construction law, etc) of neighboring countries such as Tanzania and Uganda would be added advantages.
