African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) works with the people of Africa to ensure its wildlife and wild lands thrive in modern Africa.

The organization is seeking high-performing individuals to fill the position of Senior Manager, Knowledge Management.

This position will serve as a key resource within the department of Strategy and Knowledge Management on matters relating to organizational learning.

Working under the guidance of the Vice President, Strategy & Knowledge Management.

S/he will support the implementation of the organization’s strategic roadmap goal to becoming a learning organization.

Success and sustainability of the activities is dependent on the consistent and expert guidance of someone with experience in facilitating knowledge management and organizational learning tools and methods.

S/he will lead home office and field teams to develop learning strategies for improving the performance of AWF staff.

S/he will also supervise the development of a monitoring and evaluation plan to track implementation and progress of existing and new learning strategies, identify areas of weakness, and provide guidance and coaching to improve performance.

One important function of this activity is to systematically capture, synthesize, and share among all stakeholders the information, experience, lessons learned, and best practices gained through program implementation across all AWF landscapes.

As a key resource to AWF, s/he will build internal capacity to design and facilitate knowledge management and learning strategies. This position will be based in Nairobi.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create a knowledge management strategy and framework and coach the organization in the use of KM processes and tools.
  • Within this framework, work collaboratively with program staff to identify, and prioritize types of knowledge to develop and capture.
  • Establish and maintain processes to ensure knowledge management efforts are shaping strategy and informing decision making.
  • Identify the knowledge critical to the organization; looking beyond technical knowledge (‘know-how) to strategic, business-environmental, people, and other knowledge categories (‘know-why’, ‘know-who’ etc.)
  • Drive AWF learning agenda to foster development and use of best practices and improve outcomes in grant making and initiatives.
  • Help create a culture of sharing this knowledge among staff and grantees.
  • Work with the communications team to determine how to best share knowledge to both internal and external stakeholders/audiences, including print and electronic information.
  • Guide teams across the organization through the process to develop learning strategies that will integrate learning and knowledge sharing behaviors into operational processes to enhance project deliverables.
  • Establish and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), mechanisms, and relationships for collection and organization of information, knowledge, and experience from all AWF work, and for its documentation, and distribution through relevant channels.
  • Build capacity of AWF staff to integrate knowledge management and learning into their work through face-to-face and virtual training on methods such as After Action Reviews, Peer Assists, feedback loops, World Cafe etc.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and documentation for knowledge management and learning.
  • Provide direct Knowledge Management and Learning technical assistance support to AWF countries staffs.
  • Plan, develop, stand
    up, support, and promote collaborative tools and techniques such as communities of practice to facilitate the sharing of ideas and work among internal teams and external partners.
  • Coordinate with departments across AWF to optimize technical exchange networks through ongoing monitoring and provide training as needed for staff.
  • Conduct reviews of progress to date and recommend ways to improve usage and impact.
  • Lead the M&E team to develop revisions to AWF’s internal M&E processes of gathering internal and external organizational performance information and utilization of data it to assess, improve, and demonstrate organizational impact.
  • Ensure M&E process meets international best-practices standards, fulfills donor requirements, and adequately monitors and evaluates programs in the context of the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Ensure M&E data analysis results lead to strategy development and strategy revisions where needed.
  • As part of an adaptive management process, recommend improvements to AWF’s Strategic Conceptual Model, based on programmatic monitoring, evaluation, and lessons learned.
  • Provide inputs, analysis, and statistics for quarterly, annual, and other reports to management, ensuring the data quality and integrity of all information being reported out.

    Requirements
  • Advanced degree in (or bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience) organizational development or learning, knowledge management, international development, or related field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in international development work.
  • Experience with key Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning interventions.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing knowledge management and strategic communication plans, and conceptualizing and developing technical products and communications materials.
  • Demonstrated competence in concepts and issues in knowledge management processes and organizational learning approaches.
  • Experience conveying these concepts through facilitated processes and activities to technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach knowledge management and organizational learning techniques and skills to colleagues, partners, and local organizations
  • Understanding of basic financial principles, budgeting, and cost analysis.
  • Understanding of monitoring and evaluation methodology, processes and capacities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity; knowledge of French and/or local languages considered advantageous.
  • Strong leadership capacity, including management of team resources (both financial and human), providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff, and ensuring the team’s delivery of goals.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and analytical skills. Written and spoken fluency in English required.
  • Patience, listening skills, diplomacy, and a sense of humor.
  • Willingness to travel, sometimes to remote locations within Africa.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the conservation of wildlife and wild lands.
