African Wildlife Foundation Policy and Advocacy Officer Jobs in Kenya
Position Summary Policy and Advocacy are key to ensuring that we keep the conservation agenda and our determination to safeguard an Africa where wildlife and wildlands thrive high up the national, regional, and global agenda.
One of the goals that will lead to lasting change, is to ensure that key policies, legislations, and standards are implemented to create an enabling environment for sustainable and climate-smart Natural Resources Management and Governance.
To do this, AWF needs to develop and strengthen partnerships that can build a conservation constituency that will stand up and speak for nature and create a public push for political leaders to make decisions that support sustainable natural resource management and governance. These partnerships will also be critical in scaling up conservation impact.
The Policy Advocacy and Partnerships Officer will play a key role in determining AWF’s policy and advocacy agenda, work across programs, at the county level and national level informed by the Strategic ambition. The Policy Advocacy and Partnerships Officer will coordinate specific influencing opportunities and ensure a coherent approach for policy and advocacy through key networks and coalitions.
The Officer will work closely with the Communication and Campaigns team to link global policy-making with our interventions and campaigns locally. The position holder will report directly to the Country Director and work closely with the rest of the Global Leadership. The position will carry out any other relevant duties as may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
The position will be based in Nairobi and will report to the Country Director.
Responsibilities:
Identify and engage in emerging policy and advocacy opportunities in Kenya
Establish and maintain a Kenya database of relevant Policy documents, Policy stakeholders and engagements
Develop Terms of References for workshops, service providers or consultants, Civil Support Organizations (CSO) to assist with the implementation of approved activities, in compliance
with AWF guidelines and budget;
Identify partners essential for policy engagement and advocacy
Work with Landscape leads and other unit leads, support the development of clear, innovative, consistent, and coherent messaging for our policy work, support the development of high-quality analysis, policy briefings, periodic updates, recommendations, and positions relating to our advocacy and policy priorities.
Identify strategic implementation, research, and private sector partners that can contribute to influence and bring meaningful impact to AWF in Kenya;
Support our landscape team on policy advocacy at the county level.
Ensure the Policy and Advocacy workstream meets all internal and external responsibilities regarding new initiatives, grant management, program quality, and financial management.
Support AWF’s rights based conservation approaches and values.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in conservation, natural resource management, environmental science, development studies, social sciences, or related field or equivalent work experience in development theory, policy, and practice.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in policy and advocacy work related to conservation of natural resources management, or related field of influencing the policy and practice of governments and institutions through campaigning, advocacy, and/or policy development.
Experienced in external representation with stakeholders from civil society, governments, and/or UN bodies.
Experience in evidence-based policy analysis and development.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, policy development, and fluent written/spoken English.
Experience in network coordination.
