The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy-relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center seeks to recruit a research officer to work within its Urbanization and Wellbeing in Africa unit.


African Population and Health Research Officer Center Vacancies

Responsibilities

  • Lead the process of obtaining ethical approval for research projects
  • Lead system dynamic modelling on topical issues in urbanization and wellbeing
  • Develop study tools, training manuals and field guides to use for data collection
  • Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of field teams
  • Coordinate field work and be responsible for data quality
  • Mobilize and sensitize key stakeholders about research projects
  • Participate in the data analysis, scientific writing and research proposals development
  • Prepare regular field and project reports
  • Participate in dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with relevant audiences
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor

    Qualifications

  • Masters in any of the following areas: Public Health, Economics, Sociology, Biological Sciences, Applied Statistics, Development Studies or related disciplines
  • Training in System Dynamics modelling is required
  • At least 3 years’ post qualification experience, preferably in a research setting
  • Demonstrated experience using systems dynamics software (STELLA, Vensim, or relevant modelling software) is required
  • Good computer literacy and knowledge of multiple statistical and/or qualitative software packages such as STATA, SPSS, NVivo or ATLAS.ti
  • Experience conducting field research and managing data collection teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication in
  • English and at least one African language
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines

    APHRC seeks to recruit a Research Officer in a project titled “the effect of cultural institutions and culturally-sensitive facility-based delivery on maternal and newborn health service utilization and outcomes among pastoral dropout populations in Garissa, Kenya: a formative study”. Also known as “Afya Kwa Ukoo”

    Objective of the study:

    The study proposes to test a package of two innovative community-and facility-based interventions to: a) increase demand for maternal and newborn health services the traditional clan system; and b) improve the birthing experience in institutions by providing culturally and socially sensitive and acceptable delivery services at health facilities. The ultimate goal of both interventions is to reduce maternal and newborn deaths by minimizing pregnancy-related complications and ensuring proper and timely management of obstetric emergencies.

    Responsibilities

  • Play a coordination role between APHRC, sub-grantees, health service providers, health services managers and other stakeholders in the County. S(he) will specifically be responsible for liaising and coordinating with sub-grantees to ensure that implementation adheres to the protocol and set timeframes
  • Coordinate and supervise all data collection activities- which may involve medical record review, qualitative interviews and quantitative interviews
  • Represent the APHRC at County and sub-County meetings that have a bearing on the project (Maternal, newborn and child health)
  • Write and submit field progress reports as per laid down schedule
  • Lead the development, review and translation of research tools, development of field and training manuals
  • Ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained
  • Monitor project budgets and expenditure
  • Ensure community mobilization and education of the community in relation to the research project
  • Monitor field work and ensure field staff adheres to data quality guidelines
  • Lead the
    development of monthly, quarterly and annual project reports
  • Support quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Participate in dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with appropriate audiences
  • Contribute to institutional publications (i.e. lay dissemination materials such as– policy/research briefs and fact sheets) in relation to the projects one is working on

    Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health-related field or any of the social sciences
  • At least 3 years’ post qualification experience, preferably in a research setting
  • Experience in research activities in either qualitative or quantitative data collection
  • Good supervisory/leadership skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a research institution, coordinating fieldwork or research activities
  • Good quantitative or qualitative data analysis skills; candidate should be proficient in using data analysis software such as STATA, SPSS,SAS and Nvivo
  • Experience with mixed methods will be an advantage provided one is very strong in either quantitative or qualitative methods.
  • Position will be based in Nairobi with regular visits to Garissa
  • Experience working in North Eastern or similar cultural environment before
  • Experience working with multiple partners including government agencies
  • Good interpersonal skills, working under minimum supervision, and under tight deadlines
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili
  • Be prepared to spend a significant amount of time on the project and support other projects for the duration of your contract
  • Have strong communication (written and oral) and interviewing skills.

    African Population and Health Research Assistant Center Vacancies

    The successful candidate must be self-motivated and flexible with ability to mobilize, manage and coordinate diverse groups of urban education stakeholders in East Africa. The position will be based in Nairobi with frequent travel to Tanzania and Uganda. The successful candidate will be working under the guidance of the project manager and the Education Working Group Coordinator.

    Responsibilities

  • Support in coordinating the activities of the already existing urban education groups (UEGs) under the guidance of the project coordinator
  • Lead in implementing policy and communication strategies developed by the UEGs in the three countries.
  • Support in identifying training needs and organizing of capacity building ventures of partner organizations
  • Contribute to developing donor project reports.
  • Draft meeting reports capturing the key discussions and action points and make follow ups.
  • Plan and participate in one-on-one meetings with identified key technical persons and policymakers, and
  • make follow-ups on the action points.
    Participate in organising UEG meetings as may be requested by the project manager and the project coordinator

    Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communications, Development studies or related field
  • Excellent mobilization and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong editing and facilitation skills
  • Experience working with research, advocacy or academic institutions will be an added advantage.
