Background

  • Established in 2005, AFENET is a non-profit networking and service alliance of Field Epidemiology (and Laboratory) Training Programs (FELTPs), and other applied epidemiology training programs.

  • AFENET has its headquarters in Kampala, Uganda with has operations in over 31 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa 4 countries in the Caribbean region.

  • AFENET is dedicated to helping Ministries of Health in Africa build strong, effective, sustainable programs and capacity to improve public health systems on the African continent.

  • The network’s goal is to strengthen field epidemiology and public health laboratory capacity to contribute effectively to addressing epidemics and other major public health problems in countries where we operate.

  • AFENET embraces Strengthening Laboratory Management Toward Accreditation (SLMTA) as an innovative program that builds capacity for quality improvement in laboratories from resource –limited settings.

  • This Program has been embraced by 35 countries from across the globe including 19 in Africa. Since its launch in 2009, SLMTA has been implemented in over 28 countries.

  • AFENET received funding from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to continue implementing various regional SLMTA activities including Regional SLMTA trainings, LARC Trainer of Trainers among others.

  • Project ECHO (Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a collaborative model of Medical education and care Management that empowers clinicians everywhere to provide better care to more people, right where they live. Project ECHO is a revolutionary-guided practice model that reduces health disparities in under-served and remote areas of the state, nation and World.

  • ECHO model uses a hub-and –spoke knowledge-sharing approach where expert teams lead virtual clinics, amplifying the capacity for providers to deliver best-in-practice car to the underserved in their own communities.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership, support and facilitation in designing/implementation of
    ECHO activities.

  • Provide substantive inputs in the implementation, revision and updating of SLMTA
    materials under the guidance of Subject matter experts and CDC team.

  • Coordinate with subject matter experts to ensure that all training materials are available to participants

  • Ensure frequent and timely communications with presenters and other key stakeholders

  • Announce the SLMTA training sessions and send out invites to respective participants

  • Utilize the i-ECHO platform to collect and analyse data related to all SLMTA trainings

  • Support setting up of HUB and selected spoke sites

  • Prepare inputs for reports, slides and other materials as required by CDC team and the
    AFENET Laboratory Projects Manager.

  • Participate in and contribute to key business development opportunities (development of
    proposals, partnership opportunities and meetings to seek for new resource mobilization)

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the AFENET Laboratory Projects Manager

    Requirements

    Minimum Academic Qualifications

  • Eligible candidates should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Sciences from a reputable University.

    Required Professional Work Experience

  • Experience in implementing SLMTA and laboratory accreditation activities is a must.

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in implementing/coordinating public health laboratory programs with special emphasis on laboratory capacity development.

  • A good understanding of laboratory health systems and

  • Experience in resource mobilization in public health.

  • Demonstrable experience and an in-depth knowledge of donor funded operations, USG
    rules and regulations

  • Experience working with an international organization is a valuable asset.

    Other Required Skills and Competencies

    Functional Skills

  • Excellent leadership, management and teambuilding skills;

  • Demonstrable technical report and scientific writing skills;

  • Demonstrable proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point, data visualization and
    statistical packages as well as data analysis skills are mandatory.

  • Demonstrable analytical expertise as needed to respond to programme management
    support issues;

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and a proven ability to deliver under schedules and work well under pressure;

  • Demonstrable experience in partnerships and resource mobilization;

  • Proven experience and skills in translating technical information into presentations,
    briefings and report for different audiences;

  • Knowledge of oral communication techniques and skill in presentation delivery
    programme consultation and credible verbal response to inquiries;

  • Good interpersonal relationship practices and skills to meet and deal with persons of
    diverse backgrounds. and

  • Skills in programme monitoring and evaluation is an asset;
