Project Summary
Adeso is leading in the implementation of Disasters and Emergencies Preparedness Program (DEPP) Innovation Lab, a 22 months' project under the AIM (Adeso, iHub MasterCard) Consortium.
The objective of this program is to increase the preparedness and resilience of disaster-prone communities in Garissa and Marsabit counties of Kenya by drawing on their deep knowledge of pastoralist communities.
The Consortium has formed Maarifa Kona community Innovation Labs in Garissa and Marsabit where rural communities are participating to find ideas, prototype and scale innovations for commercialization.
It is from this background that a number of community innovators are engaged with the labs to refine and prototype their ideas.
Background for Consultancy
Maarifa Kona is an Innovation Lab that was created under the Adeso, iHub, and MasterCard (AIM) consortium.
It functions as a community idea space in the rural counties of Marsabit and Garissa, Kenya in which the communities can explore and develop better innovative mechanisms to build resilience and preparedness in the face of drought.
We exist to:
To support Community based Innovators to develop practical solutions and new ideas to prepare for and manage drought
To create a new learning environment and accessible approach where people feel at ease sharing their experiences and testing their ideas related to drought preparedness.
Our focus areas include:
Food security
Water management
Livestock protection
Other interventions related to drought e.g. alternative livelihoods, early warning systems etc.
The Community Innovators selected by the Program are at their Incubation Phase and therefore it is important to identify the potential risks before implementing their projects.
Innovators with start-ups are prone to be faced with obstacles during initial stages of their project and without proper safeguarding guidelines chances of scaling are minimal.
The purpose of this consultancy is to assist Innovators to identify Risks associated with their innovations and provide insight on proper risk assessment strategy in mapping out the potential risks associated with their innovations such as
Business risks
Work processing risks
Project implementation risk.
Services to Be Performed
To provide insight on Risk Assessment and assist innovators to identify and map out risks associated with their innovations such as business risks, work processing risks and project implementation risk.
The consultant should work with each innovators assisting them to come up with their own Risk Matrix
Develop risk assessment mapping framework templates for the Innovators.
Develop a Risk Assessment Guide for sailing startups to reduce obstacles and increase the survival rate.
Each Innovators Risk Assessment Matrix and Analysis documentation
Consultancy Period
The consultancy
period will be based on call basis and on need bases travel to the fields for specific dates of the schedules engagement based on the innovators' engagement within the period of up to 30th May 2019.
Specific Deliverables
One on one consultations with Innovators and project teams.
Risk Assessment Mapping Manual for innovation start-ups
Reviews project proposals for each innovator and identify risk levels and suggest relevant remedial measures
Assist Innovators to come up with a Risk Assessment Matrix that will help them during the implementation of their projects
Application Requirements
Should be a firm / individual consultant with office/operational establishments within Kenya or able to access the area of assignment.
Proven technical and field experience of Lead/proposed Consultant with a Masters’s degree Business Management/ Administration with bias in Risk Management, Disaster and Risk Management, Economics and Development Studies or relevant qualification in a related field
Must have performed at least 3 similar consultancies in the last 5 years.
Submit a detailed financial proposal including all professional fees, travel, accommodation & transport, reporting costs, and subsistence costs. Please note all costs must be broken down into details (no lump sums, no contingencies etc.)
Minimum 6 years of experience work experience in programme or project management and risk management
Experience in start-up ventures and assessing business entities will be an added advantage.
Detailed understanding of practicalities and sensitivities involved in implementing emergency assistance and developmental projects in remote areas of Garissa and Marsabit.
Experience in Facilitation/training skills/ especially in adult learning methodologies;
Knowledge and experience of Drought-related interventions.
Demonstrated excellent training delivery analytical, writing and editing skills.
Language:
Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili skills.
Good presentation and communication skills.

In consideration of the fees paid, the Consultant expressly assigns to Adeso any copyright arising from the works the consultant produces while executing this contract.
All images (whether used for online or print purposes) must, however, bear the consultant's photo credit, as specified by international intellectual property rights.
The consultant may not use, reproduce or otherwise disseminate or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate such works without prior consent from Adeso.
