Shifting the Power Project Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Co-ordinator Jobs in Kenya

Location: Nairobi with frequent travel to Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Wajir, West Pokot counties

Reporting To: Head of Policy and Campaigns – ActionAid Kenya

Contract Period: 9 Months

Overview:-

Six international organisations – ActionAid, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Tearfund, Concern and Oxfam – are working together in the Shifting the Power project, supporting 54 of their local and national NGO partners who share the vision and ambition of playing a leading role in decision making and responding to crises in their countries.

The project is being implemented until December 2017 in 5 countries (DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan and Bangladesh) and is a START Network project supported by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) through the visionary Disasters Emergency Preparedness Programme (DEPP).

The aim of Shifting the Power is to support local actors to take their place alongside international actors in order to create a balanced humanitarian system.

To do so, it will work around 3 main areas:

Strengthen local and national organisational capacity for preparedness, response, decision making and leadership in humanitarian response

Support local and national organisations to have greater representation, voice and recognition in their relevant networks and platforms,

Work with the consortium member INGOs for them to recognise and respond to local/national organisations capacity, leadership & voice

Job Purpose

The holder of the position shall be responsible for co-ordination of STP policy engagement initiatives at national and county levels.

The job holder will also support the primary STP Consortium partners (11 NNGOs) and 5

International NGOs to develop a common strategy to revitalize the National Disaster Management Policy by building strategic coalitions and alliances around policy and governance issues in humanitarian sector.

The advocacy efforts will be seeking formal recognition of community and civil society leadership role in national and county level disasters management and policy documents and implementation frameworks.

The position holder is expected to work closely with the STP Project Manager to ensure that partners have the capacities to engage in policy and governance work at County level.
