Job Role
You will lead on developing ActionAid’s first ever global data protection and privacy policy and related information and IT security standards,
and you will also develop tools and training materials to ensure good uptake of these policies.
You will ensure our members’ compliance with
the global policy and with applicable laws and regulations, most importantly the EU’s GDPR.
Finally you will act as the designated Data
Protection Officer for ActionAid International’s Global Secretariat,reporting to and liaising with regulatory authorities as needed.

Develop and roll out internal policies
Act as a trusted and impartial expert advisor to the International Leadership Team and Board Risk and Audit Committee on data security and privacy risks and risk mitigation measures.
Establish legitimacy and build effective relationships with a wide range of senior stakeholders internally (e.g. Country
Directors, board members and International Directors) and externally (e.g. regulators), in order to ensure effective implementation of policies.
Conduct an audit of all relevant organization data, including supporter data, beneficiary / rights holder data and personnel
data
Carry out impact assessments for new projects, providing
advice as required
Conduct audits of key suppliers and carry out due diligence on
new suppliers from a privacy perspective
Develop global policies and procedures to guide the organization to compliance with the EU GDPR and other applicable laws and regulations as needed.
Maintain a risk assessment process including DP Impact
Assessments, and work closely with the Head of Assurance and Head of Internal Audit to ensure that DP risks are understood and monitored as part of routine compliance checks.
Drives implementation of essential elements of data protection compliance
Drive the implementation of global policies and procedures, including principles of data processing, data subjects’ rights, data protection by design and default, security of processing;
Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including countries in the federation and Global Secretariat (HR, Digital and Technology, Communications, Fundraising, FinOps, Programmes)
Provide guidance to AA project teams on data protection and privacy requirements for new and existing technology platforms
Manage and respond to subject access requests, as well as other data protection rights

Lead on the delivery of the GDPR communications and
awareness activities
Develop a federation-wide training plan and materials and occasionally deliver virtual and face to face data protection training, while also commissioning other experts and trainers
to support as needed.
Education, Language & Qualifications
Graduate degree
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, ability to inform and engage through written communication
Professional qualifications such as CIPP/E, CIPP/T, CIPM are ideal but not necessary
Essential Knowledge, skills and Experience
Excellent knowledge of General Data Protection Regulation, Data Protection Act 2018, Privacy and Electronic
Communications Regulation and other data protection or privacy laws and regulations potentially applicable to ActionAid
International
Ability to build effective relationships and establish authority with senior stakeholders including Country Directors, International Directors and Board members
Experience in data protection and legal compliance
A strong understanding of the principles of Privacy by Design and Default
