    Job Summary: Act! is recruiting five (5) Assistant Program Officers, Democracy and Human Rights (DHR) who will be based in the Nairobi, Garrisa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia Counties.

    The officers will primarily support the implementation of democracy, human rights and governance initiatives within the organization.

    They will track and provide up to date information on the democracy, human rights and governance issues including but not limited to advocacy, electoral reforms, transparency, accountability and participation, and devolution.

    The Assistant Program Officers will link closely with strategic partners and advice program staff on issues in the democracy, human rights and governance sectors.

    The officers will also support procurement, logistics and administrative activities of the DHR program.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Specifically, the Assistant Program Officers will be responsible for but not limited to:

    Reform environment tracking and reporting
  • Develop accurate reports analyzing the implications of the various reform related activities. These will be presented twice a week to a program team at Act!
    On a monthly basis, compile and maintain a roster of activities to be implemented by the DHR team and partners
  • Establish and maintain regular contact with the government and other project partners, CSOs and other relevant beneficiary groups and partner organizations, in order to ensure successful implementation of DHR interventions
  • Attend and provide support to DHR partners through CSO meetings
  • Represent Act! in meetings on reforms (e.g. those convened by the Government or the private sector)
  • Develop and maintain contacts and sustained networking with key actors in the sectors within which Act! is working.

    Program Support
  • Prepare DHR bi-weekly county context analysis and update reports.
  • Present monthly context and program updates to DHR program staff.
  • Support the DHR program team in program monitoring, with particular focus on community and public events geared towards program implementation.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to the DHR program including procurement of goods and services and organizing workshops and events
  • Enhance visibility of DHR grantees
    activities through various communication initiatives- including photography and success story writing.
  • Support DHR Program Coordinator in writing quarterly, semi-annual and annual project reports.
  • Actively participate in the joint reviews and provide overview of context analysis.
  • Support the DHR team in organizing program activities including workshops, meetings and other events.
  • Participate in Capacity Building Workshops and Trainings.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications, Experience and Skills

    Academic Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science or any other related field.

    Professional qualifications
    Professional training in Project Development Cycle or related fields.

    Relevant Experience
  • At least 3 years’ relevant work experience in working with state and non-state actors involved in democracy, human rights or governance.
  • Experience in implementing community level activities is desirable. Experience in administration, procurement, logistics and communication is key.

  • Willingness to travel frequently.

    Complexity and difficulty of the work
    A demanding job that requires tolerance, community knowledge, project area and local political dynamics.

    Terms and Conditions
    Contract:
    1 year contingent on funding and performance.
