About ACCORD

  • The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society institution working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD’s primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict.

  • ACCORD specialises in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, research and conflict analysis.

  • ACCORD is currently recruiting for the position of Coordinator for the Training for Peace (TfP) Programme in its Peace Support Operations Unit. This is a one-year fixed term project-based position, with the possibility of extension for the duration of the project.

  • The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme is a Norwegian funded capacity support programme to the African Union Commission (AUC). The primary objective of the TfP is to contribute to strengthening the capacity of the AUC to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts and insecurity on the continent through the deployment of effective full spectrum peace operations.

    Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • The Coordinator is to lead the strategic and substantive coordination and implementation of all initiatives in the Unit.

  • S/he will provide support to the General Manager: Programmes in meeting the objectives and implementation of the Department. The specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

    Project Coordination, Planning and reporting

  • Coordinating the strategic and operational design and planning for the unit

  • Developing a detailed plan for the TfP Programme, which includes Identifying all activities,
    & research outputs & implementation of outputs against the year plan;

  • Designing & fundraising for new Peace Support Operation (PSO) interventions and related activities;

  • Providing substantive and technical support to PSO initiatives

    Research

  • Undertaking research, writing and authoring articles, including filed related applied research.

  • Coordinating the outputs and overseeing the implementation of activities within the unit

  • Co-ordinating the annual assessment and review of the unit;

  • Preparing institutional and donor reports;

  • Liaising and networking with stakeholders and representing ACCORD at seminars and conferences.

  • Management, and HR coordination of personnel in the unit.

    Financial Management

  • Preparation and oversight of the annual budgets for the unit;

  • Monitoring the financial planning and expenditure for each unit activity.

    Skills & Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree (Phd, Masters) in International Relations, Political Science with Peace and Security Specialisation, Security Studies, Africa Studies;

  • Minimum of five – seven years operational and programme experience in the PSO’s field;
    Experience in programme coordination, planning and reporting;

  • Substantive knowledge in the field of PSO in Africa that integrates policy, practice and research and addresses emerging issues in peace and security; track record of publishing on African peace and security will be an advantage;

  • Fluency in English;

  • Strong oral presentation, communication and writing skills;

  • Attention to detail, plan and prioritise work, manage several tasks and meet deadlines to successfully deliver to a diversity of objectives and demands

  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, MS Teams and database packages.
