The Test of English as a Foreign Language™ (TOEFL®) measures the English-ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings.
The TOEFL® test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States.
More than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries rely onTOEFL® test scores to help make admissions decisions.
You can take the TOEFL test at your choice of conveniently located, ETS-approved test sites around the world. You also save time and money since the entire test is given in one day, rather than coming back a second day like some other tests.
Measures Academic Skills
The TOEFL test helps prove you have the English skills you will actually use in an academic classroom. In the test, you may read a passage from a textbook and listen to a lecture and then speak or write in response, just like you would in a classroom. Because the test is composed of 100% academic questions and tasks, many universities consider it the most appropriate test to use when making admissions decisions.
By sending TOEFL scores to your selected university, you will be proving that you are ready for academic success.
More than 9,000 colleges, agencies and other institutions in over 130 countries accept TOEFL® scores. Other organizations rely on TOEFL scores as well:
For Australia, TOEFL iBT® test scores can be used to satisfy the required language component for student, post-study, skilled migration and business visas.
For the U.K., TOEFL iBT test scores are accepted for Tier 4 student visas under certain conditions.
The TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success.
About the TOEFL iBT® Test

In addition to the test, the ETS TOEFL Program provides tools and guides to help you prepare for the test and improve your English-language skills.

To view or print your Registration Confirmation:
2. Valid, acceptable identification (ID) document(s):

If you do not bring valid and acceptable identification, or if the name on your ID does not exactly match the name on your registration, you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will not be refunded.

For the TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the Internet, you will receive four scaled section scores TOEFL and a total score:
In addition to your scores, your test taker score report also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of your performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do.
There is no passing or failing TOEFL® score; individual higher education institutions and agencies set their own score requirements.
TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period.
If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test within 12 days of your existing appointment.
ETS uses both human raters and automated scoring methods to offer a complete and accurate picture of a test taker's ability.
While automated scoring models have advantages, they do not measure the effectiveness of the language response and the appropriateness of its content.
Human raters are needed to attend to a wider variety of features, such as the quality of ideas and content as well as form.
Additionally, studies have shown that prompts designed for fully automated scoring have been more vulnerable to prompt-specific preparation and memorized responses.
The TOEFL test uses automated scoring to complement human scoring for the two tasks in the Writing section. Combining human judgment for content and meaning, and automated scoring for linguistic features, ensures consistent, quality scores.
