Types of Strathmore University Scholarships, Financial Aid and Eligibility Criteria

1. European Union Bursary

This is open to final year students in secondary schools to study the following professional courses at Strathmore University in the coming year:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Diploma in Business Management
  • Diploma in Business Information Technology

Two application forms are sent to each of the top 100 secondary schools in KCSE ranking. The school selects two top students based on their mock examination performance. 

To qualify for the bursary applicants should:

  • Be capable of achieving a mean grade of B+, as well as a B+ in English and a B+ in Mathematics in the KCSE examinations.
  • Be bright and needy
  • Have full accommodation fees
  • Raise 10% tuition fees as the bursary covers 90%
  • Pay full KASNEB registration and examinations fees for CPA applicants as this is not included in the scholarship 

2. East African Breweries Limited Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship scheme was started in April 2001 by the EABL Foundation under the Skills for Life programme to invest in bright and needy students by offering full scholarships.

The scholarship scheme is open to students who wish to pursue the following degree courses offered at Strathmore University:

  • Bachelor of Commerce - 3 students per year
  • Bachelor of Business Information Technology - 3 students per year 

3. McKinney Rogers Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship scheme is an initiative of the McKinney Rogers Foundation Scholarship, a global consulting firm to invest in bright and needy students by offering full scholarships.

The scholarship scheme is open to students who wish to pursue the following degree courses offered at Strathmore University:

  • Bachelor of Commerce - 1 student per year
  • Bachelor of Business Information Technology - 1 student per year 

Who can apply for EABL and McKinney Rogers Foundation Scholarships.

Selection for EABL and MRF scholarships is made on the basis of outstanding academic results and financial need. 

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship is open to Kenyan students who sat for KCSE in the year preceding the the year of intake and attained a minimum grade of A- 

To apply, a student must fill in an application form that can be downloaded - see links at the end of page and submit it with the following.

  • Copy of KCSE results
  • Copy of School Leaving Certificate
  • Documentation showing financial need for example a recommendation from your local Chief.
  • Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • - Be an SU ambassador
  • - Adhereto the expected SU academic and discipline standards
  • - Maintain an average of 60% and above to remain eligible
  • - Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others
  • - Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service 

Note: Application forms are also available in the local newspapers between April and May of each year. Applications must be submitted between April and May of each year for the July intake 

4. Strathmore University Scholarships

Strathmore University has the following scholarship schemes: 

a. Mathematics Contest Scholarships

Strathmore University awards the best form four boy and girl in six of the country's top mathematics contests. These top students are awarded a tuition fees scholarship to pursue Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) or Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT).

Students are selected from mathematics contest held in the following:

  • Nyeri High School
  • Maseno School
  • Alliance Girls High School
  • Mangu High School
  • Kabarak High School
  • Mary Mount High School 

To qualify for the scholarship applicants should:

  • Be capable of achieving a mean grade of B+, as well as a B+ in English and a B+ in Mathematics in the KCSE examinations.
  • Have full accommodation fees
  • Pay full registration and examination fees for CPA/ACCA applicants, as the scholarship does note cater for this.
  • Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • - Be an SU ambassador
  • - Adhereto the expected SU academic and discipline standards.
  • - Be ranked inquarter 1 or 2 to remain eligible
  • - Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others
  • - Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service

b. Sports Scholarships

Since 2006 Strathmore University has been awarding scholarships to candidates who have demonstrated talent in the various sports offered at the University.

i) Rugby ii) Hockey iii) Basketball iv) Soccer v) Handball vi) Volleyball   vii) Athletics

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants should:

  1. Attain a minimum grade B in the KCSE examinations
  2. Attend trials at the University between November and March
  3. Have an admission letter from Strathmore University
  4. Have full accommodation fees
  5. Be able to pay the difference as the scholarship covers between 75 – 90 %.

Upon selection, the successful candidate will be expected to:

- Be an SU ambassador

- Attend all important sports related functions in his/her discipline.

- Adhereto the expected SU academic and discipline standards.

- Maintain an average of 55% and above to remain eligible

- Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others

- Be willing to be actively involved in University events and co-curricular programs.

c. Rebates

Sports 

Strathmore University awards fee rebates to top non-scholarship students who excel in sports annually. Players must have been exemplary on and off the field with an equally impressive disciplinary record.

Family

This rebate is awarded to parents/guardians with 2 or more students undertaking a degree course at the University. The rebate is awarded to the student who performed better in the previous academic year.

Application for the Family Rebate is done annually by filling in a Family Fee Benefit Form and attaching copies of birth certificates and academic transcripts and submit them to the Financial Aid Office.


5. Other Sponsorships/Bursaries

These are grants based on need and outstanding academic ability andare normally awarded to students who meet additional criteria that may be set by the donor. Some of the donors and well-wishers are Rattansi Educational Trust, Ranmal Shah Trust, Rahimtullah Trust, Mzima Co-operative society among others.

I&M Bank Scholarship

The I&M Bank as part of their corporate social responsibility awarded 10 scholarship in 2010 to 10 students. The scholarships were awarded to bright and needy students who had attained a minimum KCSE grade of A- to pursue courses at Strathmore University in the following degree course:

  • Bachelor of Business Science in Actuarial Science,
  • Bachelor of Business Science in Finance
  • Bachelor of Business Science in Financial Economic

 Eligibility criteria

  1. The scholarship is open to Kenyan students who sat for KCSE in the year preceding the the year of intake and attained a minimum grade of A- .
  2. To apply, a student must fill in an application form and submit it with the following .
  • Copy of KCSE Result Slip
  • Copy of School Leaving Certificate
  • Documentation showing financial need
  • Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to: 
  • - Be an SU ambassador
  • - Adhereto the expected SU academic and discipline standards.
  • - Maintain an average of 60% and above to remain eligible
  • - Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others
  • - Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service.

Student Loans - Strathmore University Loan

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have attained a minimum grade of an A- (minus) in KCSE.
  2. Come from a financially challenged background.
  3. Must have an admission letter from Strathmore University to pursuea fulltime undergraduate degree.
  4. Bea Kenyan citizen
  5. Have full accommodation fees

Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:

i) Be an SU ambassador

ii) Adhereto the expected SU academic and discipline standards.

iii) Maintain an average of 60% and above to remain eligible

iv) Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others

v) Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service.

 

SU Loan Terms and Conditions

1. The loan covers between 50 - 90% of tuition fees.

2. The loan period is 10 years.

  • Year 1- 4: the student is pursuing his/her degree at the University. During this period the loan attracts 0% interest rate.
  • Year 5: the loanee is given one year after graduating from university to look for a job. The loan will still be at 0% interest rate.
  • Year 6-10 and regardless of whether the student has graduated/completed studies, the loan starts attracting an interest rate of 4% on reducing balance per annum. Loan repayment starts from year six.

3. Early repayments are encouraged before year six.

N/B; Students awarded the loan will be expected to register with the University’s nominated Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) or any other party contracted by the University for debt collection.

Merit Loan

The Merit Loan is lent to bright and financially needy undergraduate students in their first year of study to enable them pursue a degree course in the University.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. An applicant must have an admission letter from Strathmore University to pursue an undergraduate degree.
  2. Attained a high school grade of A- and above.
  3. Applicant comes from a financially challenged background and cannot meet the cost of the chosen degree course.
  4. Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:-
  5. Be an SU ambassador
  6. Adhere tothe expected SU academicand discipline standards.
  7. Maintain an average of 60% and above to remain eligible
  8. Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others
  9. Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service.

Terms and Conditions

The loan is only available to fulltime undergraduate students.

1) The loan period is 10 years.

  • Year 1- 4: the student is pursuing his/her degree at the University, during this period the loan attracts 2% interest rate.
  • Year 5: the loanee (student) is given one year after graduating to look for a job. The loan will still be at 2% interest rate.
  • Year 6-10 and regardless of whether the student has graduated/completed studies: loan starts attracting an interest rate of 4% on reducing balance per annum.

2) The Merit Loan is reviewed annually and a percentage of the amount written-off, based on the student’s performance.

3) At the end of his/her studies the student shall be provided with a detailed repayment schedule indicating the minimum monthly installments to be paid.

The loanee may however choose to pay more than the minimum amount indicated in the schedule. The loan shall be repaid in monthly installments to the University’s bank account that will be provided in the detailed repayment schedule.

4) An officer from Strathmore University may visit the student´s home to establish if s/he is financially needy and deserves the loan.

KIVA loans at Strathmore University

Strathmore University has partnered with KIVA, to offer a unique student loan which enablesstudents from low income families to obtain tuition fee and laptop loans. KIVA is an online platform that connects field partners to social investors. Strathmore University is KIVA’s first non-traditional partner specializing in student loans. 

The tuition and laptop loans are available to undergraduate degree students in the full-time programme. To be eligible, a student must attend a Kiva Loan information session to understand the loan requirements and application process.

Facts about KIVA loans

Full tuition Loans

This is a long-term 10 year loan that includes a grace period of up to five years. At the end of the grace period, repayments become due on a monthly basis. The borrower is charged an interest rate of 0% during the grace period of the loan, and 4% for the remainder of the loan term. The application for full-tuition loans takes place every year in May for programs starting in July. The application process includes an interview with the student, parent/guardian as well as a home visit.

KIVA loan applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must have completed their secondary school 2 years prior to the application
  2. A minimum of an A– from national schools.
  3. A minimum grade of B+ from provincial schools
  4. A minimum grade of B from district schools
  5. Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:-
  • Be an SU ambassador
  • Adhere to the expected SU academic and discipline standards.
  • Maintain an average of 60% and above to remain eligible
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others
  • Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service.

In addition, the interview panel will look at other abilities that the student may have.

Partial Tuition Loans

These are shorter loans available to continuing students in their 2nd and 3rd year of study facing cash-flow constraints.

Fourth year students may apply 12 months before the end of their degree course and must be referred by their faculty/school and mentor. Repayments are due monthly, and the borrower is charged an interest of 4% per annum.

The borrower starts making repayments one month after disbursement, in addition, two-thirds of the loan must be paid before the student sits for their final exam. For queries on partial loans, please email kiva@strathmore.edu with the subject as 'PARTIAL LOANS QUERY'.

Laptop Loans

These are available to 2nd and 3rd year students. Fourth year students may apply 12 months before the end of their degree and must be referred by their faculty and mentor.

Repayments are due monthly, and the borrower is charged an interest of 4% per annum. The borrower starts making repayments one month after disbursement.
