Assistant County Nutrition Coordinator

1 Position

Vacancy No. FN 073-10-13

Location: Homabay

Employment Type: Contract

Reports to: County Project Coordinator

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • With the support of the county Coordinator, coordinate the implementation of the iCCM Project in Homabay county by KEMRI, MOH and other partners to improve the accessibility, utilization and quality of child health services at the community level
  • Track Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS), coordinate all the project VAS activities in the county and participate in VAS event in the county including MALEZI BORA.
  • Coordinate initial and ongoing countywide training, refresher trainings and On The Job training (OJT) of the primary health workers on iCCM in Homabay County.
  • Coordinate project supplies; ordering, distribution and monitoring of consumption and monthly reporting on consumption.
  • Participate in the development of health and Nutrition promotion-related materials (IEC) in liaison with the relevant partners.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to the project and assist in preparation of quarterly project work plans and progress reports in line with donor requirements.
  • Provide continuous guidance and technical support on all aspect of nutrition to the project and MOH staff in project area.
  • Coordinate all community-based activities including, Community dialogue days and encourage community participation in monitoring and demanding for quality health services.
  • Contribute to documentation of the project lessons to enable learning from the action.
  • Network and collaborate with donors (WHO and UNICEF), Ministry of Health, County authorities and other existing partners and ensure their involvement in the project activities.
  • Any other duty assigned by the County Project Coordinator.

    Requirements

  • University degree in Nutrition from a recognized university
  • At least 3 years experience with NGO in a similar position or with the Ministry of health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge on Community Management of Acute
  • Malnutrition (CMAM) and High impact Nutrition intervention (HiNi).
  • Experience of community health strategy programmes implementation.
  • In-depth skills in training and management
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure.
  • Must be a computer literate and very comfortable with standard office software and Internet research
  • Able to monitor, gather and evaluate information of broad scope and complexity and generate reports.
  • Have significant research management (public health or clinical studies) skills.
  • Familiar with qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviewing and focus group discussions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili.

    Job description:

  • Responsible for ensuring that all the required data related to the ICCM implementation are captured using the iCCM database;
  • Man the project hotline and prepare client and partners feedback
  • S/he will receive pneumonia case notification texts from the CHWs and link them to the link research nurses and coordinators for confirmation follow up.
  • Review the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of data reported by project staff and CHWs and CHEWs
  • Support project trainings, develop and maintain project trainings report
  • Analyzes the data to inform program implementation
  • Work closely with the principal investigator and county coordinator to produce reports on the county set indicators.
  • Document findings and recommendations of field visits for follow-up action
  • Prepare quarterly, biannual and annual tabular and narrative reports.
  • Assist the County and sub-county iCCM Coordinator in preparing program/project status reports and documenting lessons learned in specific technical areas for wider dissemination. Manage, track and perform other related duties as directed by the Principal Investigator
  • Collaborate with County and Sub-county coordinators to design logical frameworks and indicator collection plans.
  • Plan and conduct field-level data collection, at different stages of the project to support project cycle management.
  • Any other duties assigned by the study Coordinator or Principal Investigator

    Key Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate should have a first degree in statistics, social sciences or its equivalent and at least 2 years work experience in monitoring and evaluation, data management and analysis
  • Should have professional training in M&E
  • Should possess quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, advanced report writing skills, excellent database management skills (SQL, access, excel) and exceptional analytical skills (STATA, SAS or SPSS)
  • Strong data management and analysis skills, solid writing skills, and excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical and information management skills, with advanced proficiency in relational databases.
  • Experience in project management and be conversant with government M&E system
  • Self-motivated, proactive, ability to prioritize and have good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong capacity to work with initiative, flexibility and without close supervision
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of local dialects will be an added advantage but not compulsory.

    Key duties and responsibilities:

    Job description:

  • The nurses will work closely with other project staff and MOH staff in implementing iCCM study.
  • Supervise and mentor CHWs in the project operation area using standard checklist.
  • Performance assessments of CHW skills, Identify gaps and provide capacity building through On The Job Training (OJT).
  • Supervise routine data collection and commodity accountability by the CHWs and Community Unit CHEWs.
  • Help to provide evidence that a trained CHW can classify, diagnose and treat Pneumonia in children under 5 years by review Pneumonia cases identified by CHWs at house hold level to a certain the Diagnosis.
  • Follow-up visits of all children treated by CHWs at home.
  • Coordinate and document community events like action and dialogue days.
  • Monitor Vit A Supplementation coverage in his/her area of operation and supervise Vit A supplementation at level one. Participate in community mobilization and information dissemination.
  • Ensure quality and timely delivery of all project reports, in their agreed format.
  • Any other duty assigned by the Sub county coordinator

    Requirements:

  • Applicants must be resident in the different districts in which the study will be conducted. Evidence will be required.
  • A Kenya Enrolled Community Health Nurse (KECHN).
  • MUST be registered with Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Fluency (written and verbal) in English, Swahili, and Dholuo.
  • At least two year working experience in a health facility.
  • Mature, responsible, dependent, highly organized and motivated persons
  • Willing to work in a rural set up and perform house hold visits on a daily basis
  • Good inter-personal, report writing and communication skills
  • Strong capacity to work with initiative, flexibility and without close supervision
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines
