36 schools in KCSE list of shame

The results of candidates from 36 national and county schools were cancelled because they cheated in last year’s Form Four exam.

The schools were not ranked because the administrators failed to report the cheating to Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec).

The institutions are in Siaya, Meru, Nairobi, Tana River, Wajir, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyandarua, Migori, Kisumu, Busia, Narok, Nandi and Mandera counties.

Knec chief executive officer Paul Wasanga said among the schools were national schools that included Meru School, Butula Boys, Maranda High and Ng’iya Girls.

Speaking to journalists in his office, Mr Wasanga said examination centres where candidates were involved in irregularities were not ranked except in cases where less than five candidates cheated.

Reacting to protests from leaders in Siaya County over failure by the council to rank Maranda High, Mr Wasanga said the school had more than five candidates involved in cheating. “Maranda High School was not ranked because 23 candidates in the school were involved in collusion in the computer studies examination,” he said.

He noted that in the 2012 KCSE examination, Maranda was ranked because it had only one candidate involved in cheating.

Mr Wasanga noted that examination centres where headteachers report irregularities to Knec, and where less than 10 candidates are involved in irregularities, are ranked.

He asked leaders not to read politics in the decision not to rank Maranda as several other schools across the country where cheating was noted were not listed.

"The matter should also not be blown out of proportion because this is not the first time that Knec
has failed to rank schools that did not meet the stipulated criteria," Mr Wasanga said.
